About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – a proper faff from the start. I’d packed the car the night before, convinced I was organised for once, but halfway through the Borders, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping round some single-track road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. We ended up stopping at a layby for a brew and a laugh about my hopeless sense of direction, but by the time we trundled into Airdrie Farm, the anticipation was buzzing. Nestled near the farmhouse yet tucked away in its own private spot, this superb detached two-storey house – converted from a traditional farm building to an exceptionally high standard – hit us with the best first impressions. The enclosed garden was a dream, wheelchair access at both front and rear making it dead welcoming, and that secluded vibe? Pure bliss.

From the off, it was all about doing sod all, and I mean that in the best possible way. No grand plans, no ticking off lists of must-sees – just sinking into the joy of slowing right down. We’d potter out to the garden first thing, mugs of tea in hand, breathing in that crisp Scottish air while the mist lifted off the fields. It’s got this perfect enclosed feel, like your own little world, with birdsong and the odd curious sheep peering over from afar. I’d flop into one of the chairs with a dog-eared paperback – some lightweight crime novel I’d been saving – and lose hours without a care. The other half would doze off under the parasol, and we’d only stir for a lazy lunch of local cheddar and crusty bread scavenged from the nearby farm shop.

Afternoons blurred into the same glorious rhythm. A gentle wander around the garden to stretch the legs, maybe deadhead a few flowers if I was feeling energetic (which I rarely was), then back to the sofa inside with the windows flung wide. The house itself is spot on for this kind of slouch – cosy corners, cracking views, and enough space to feel indulgent without being flashy. We’d fire up the kettle for endless cups of proper builder’s tea, flick through the telly for a bit of rubbish daytime TV, and chat about nothing much. One day, I caught myself staring at a butterfly on the lavender for a good ten minutes, mesmerised, and thought, “This is it, isn’t it? This is the point.”

There was a smidge of self-reflection one evening, sat out as the sun dipped low. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, emails, the lot – and here I was, properly unwinding for the first time in ages. Felt a bit daft admitting it, but those lazy cottage days reminded me how rare it is to just *be*. No pressure to dash off to Sandyhills or Southerness beaches, though they’re a short drive away if the mood strikes. We did pop to Southerness one afternoon for a nose at the sandy stretches and a chippy tea, but even that was low-key, paddling in the shallows and heading back before the midges clocked on.

Honestly, it was the perfect antidote to rushing about. If you’re after recharging without the hassle, this corner of Dumfries and Galloway delivers. I left feeling lighter, already plotting a return to do even less.
