About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – a proper faff from the start. I’d packed the car with enough books and snacks to last a siege, but halfway through, just past the M6 turn-off, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent me on a detour through some winding lanes that felt like they hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Cue mild panic as the signal dropped and I ended up asking a sheep for directions. Mercifully, about an hour later than planned, I rolled into New Galloway, Scotland’s smallest Royal Burgh, buzzing with that pre-holiday anticipation. What if it was rubbish? What if the weather was dreich? But no – first glimpse of the place, and I was grinning like an idiot.

The holiday spot was spot-on: luxury contemporary digs for four in a traditional Galloway house, owned by the community itself, right next door to their cracking licensed village shop. Popped in there first thing for milk and a cheeky bottle of local red, and the welcome was so warm I felt like I’d gatecrashed a family do. Unloaded my bags, and there it was – the garden. Oh, that garden. A lush, private haven with views over the glen, birdsong on tap, and not a soul in sight. I’d been dreaming of this: no itinerary, no hustle, just the joy of doing bugger all.

First morning, I cracked open a book – some daft crime thriller I’d been saving – and plonked myself in a lounger with a cuppa. The sun filtered through the trees, and time just… stretched. No emails pinging, no kids yelling (mine were off elsewhere, bless ’em). I read maybe ten pages before nodding off, waking up to the distant bleat of sheep and a magpie eyeing my biscuits. Lunch was a faff-free affair: raided the fridge for cheese, bread from the shop next door, and whatever was in the veg basket. Ate it outside, feet up, watching clouds do their thing. Pure bliss.

Afternoons blurred into the same glorious rhythm. A gentle wander around the garden paths, picking a few herbs for no reason other than it felt nice. Sat with a podcast about nothing much, or just stared at the hills, letting my mind wander. One day, I even managed a whole chapter without fidgeting – a personal best. There’s something magic about this corner of the world; it nudges you to slow down without you even noticing. The air’s so clean it clears your head, and before long, I was reflecting on how I never switch off at home. Work brain always on, rushing about like a blue-arsed fly. Here? I was properly present, savouring the quiet. Laughed at myself when I caught my reflection in the window – tousled hair, book in hand, looking more hippy than city slicker.

Evenings were for lazy suppers – pasta slung together, wine from the shop, maybe a stroll to the village green if I felt energetic (ha!). Bed early, windows open to the night sounds. By the end of the week, I didn’t want to leave. Dumfries and Galloway’s got this knack for making you forget the rat race. If you’re after recharging with zero effort, this is your spot. I’m already plotting a return – sat-nav be damned.
