About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – a proper comedy of errors from the start. We’d set off from Glasgow full of beans, sandwiches packed and the satnav chirping away like it knew best. But oh no, halfway through, it decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour via some winding back lane that looked like it hadn’t seen a car since the war. Mud everywhere, and just as we hit a pothole the size of a crater, my thermos of tea exploded all over the dashboard. Cue me swearing under my breath (well, maybe a bit louder) while the kids in the back howled with laughter, turning it into a soggy slip-and-slide. By the time we spotted the sign for Penninghame Estate, I was frazzled, wondering if this holiday was jinxed before it began.

Pulling into those exclusive grounds felt like stumbling into a secret hideaway, though. The anticipation had been building for weeks – visions of lazy forest walks and no emails pinging at me – and suddenly, there it was: this cracking apartment tucked away in the old stable block of Penninghame House. Spacious enough for our lot, with that quiet, peaceful vibe right in the Galloway Forest Park. Privacy on tap, no nosy neighbours, just the rustle of trees and birds doing their thing. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, dead spot-on. We tumbled out of the car, still wiping tea stains off our jeans, and the fresh air hit like a reset button. The place screamed ‘relax and recharge’, with wide-open spaces inside that made our city flat feel like a cupboard.

No time to unpack properly before we were out exploring. A quick wander down to the nearby River Cree – it’s literally on the doorstep – had us skimming stones and dipping toes in the cool water. The kids were in heaven, and I caught myself grinning like an idiot, thinking how I’d been so wound up at work lately. This was my gentle nudge: slow down, you daft sod. Later, we fired up the barbecue on the private patio (yes, it has one – pure genius), grilling local sausages from Newton Stewart’s farm shop, just a short hop away. The sun dipped low over the forest, painting everything golden, and we scoffed it all with a cheeky bottle of wine, laughing about our disastrous drive.

Next morning, we ventured into the Dark Sky Park – it’s right there in the estate grounds, perfect for stargazing without straying far. No light pollution, just millions of twinkly dots overhead. We even spotted a deer tiptoeing through the trees at dusk, which had the little ones whispering like it was a Disney film. Meals were a doddle too; we nipped to the village for fresh baking from the Old Bakehouse, proper Scottish flapjacks that stuck to the ribs. One evening, we tried a bit of fishing on the river – me, hopeless as ever, but the peace was worth every tangled line.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It stripped away the stress and let the real magic shine: the solitude, the nature on your sill, the chance to just breathe. If you’re after a family bolt-hole that feels worlds away yet handy for cream teas and woodland jaunts, this corner of Galloway’s got it in spades. We left recharged, promising to return – tea stains and all.
