About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect coppery gold, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the missus piled into the car from Glasgow, full of excitement for a cosy break in a holiday cottage near Stranraer. But about halfway, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with our windscreen. Thump! Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and the car’s bonnet looking like it’d been in a pillow fight. We pulled over, checked the damage (just a scratch, phew), and laughed it off over a thermos of tea. Typical me, turning a scenic drive into a feathered farce.

By the time we rolled up to the cottage that crisp October afternoon, the anticipation was buzzing. Nestled in a quiet spot with views over the hills, it was one of those classic stone-built places – think low ceilings, a wood-burning stove, and that lived-in charm you can’t fake. First impressions? Spot on. The autumn sun was dipping low, casting a warm glow over everything, and the air smelled of damp earth and sea salt from the nearby Loch Ryan. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of red, toasting our good fortune.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning the ordinary into something magical. Mornings started with mist rolling off the water like a gentle haunting, perfect for wrapping up in scarves and heading out for walks along the coastal paths at Glenwhan Gardens, just a stone’s throw away. The trees there were a riot of reds and oranges, leaves crunching underfoot, and we’d spot the odd squirrel hoarding nuts like it was prepping for the apocalypse. I felt a proper twit slipping on a pile of wet ones once, but it just added to the fun – who needs dry shoes on holiday?

Afternoons were for pottering around Stranraer’s harbour, where the fishing boats bobbed under grey skies, and the seasonal stalls sold the last of the bramble jams and apple chutneys. We’d grab fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench with the wind whipping our cheeks, watching seals pop up like cheeky locals saying hello. Evenings back at the cottage were pure bliss: stove roaring, us tucked under blankets with a stew bubbling away. The darkening nights drew us closer, sharing stories and playing cards by lamplight – no telly distractions, just the crackle of logs and the occasional owl hoot outside.

One quiet moment by the window, sipping whisky as rain pattered the panes, had me reflecting on how rushed life back home feels. Autumn here slowed us down, made us appreciate the fleeting beauty – those golden hours before the chill sets in proper. It was a reminder that sometimes the best holidays aren’t about ticking off sights, but letting the season wrap you up in its mellow embrace. We left feeling recharged, promising to return next year for more of that Dumfries and Galloway magic. If you’re after a proper autumn escape, this is the spot.
