About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – a proper faff from the start. We’d set off from the Midlands full of beans, playlist blasting, but halfway through, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour through some winding lanes that felt like they hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. I ended up white-knuckling the wheel, swearing under my breath (well, quietly, with the kids in the back), while my other half helpfully suggested we “embrace the scenic route”. By the time we finally rolled up, I was knackered, but oh, what a sight greeted us.

Pulling into this cosy stone cottage on the edge of Dumfries, with those far-reaching views across open farmland to the Solway estuary and the Lake District hills beyond, it was love at first glance. Rurally tucked away yet just a cheeky 10-minute drive into town for supplies, it screamed “relaxation station”. The patio and hot tub? Absolute game-changers, framed by panoramic vistas that made you forget the world existed.

From that moment, we did bugger all – and it was bliss. No grand plans, no ticking off tourist spots. Just lazy cottage days, the kind where time stretches out like warm toffee. Mornings kicked off with brews on the patio, watching mist lift off the fields while the kids pottered in the garden, building dens from sticks and imagination. I’d crack open a book – some dog-eared thriller I’d been meaning to read for months – and sink into a lounger, the sun sneaking through the clouds just enough to warm my toes. Lunch was simple: cheese ploughman’s from the local shop in Dumfries, eaten al fresco with the estuary glinting in the distance.

Afternoons blurred into hot tub sessions, bubbles churning as we gazed at those stunning sunsets painting the sky in oranges and pinks. One evening, we stayed put till the stars came out – proper dark skies here, no light pollution to spoil the show. I pointed out constellations I half-remembered from school, probably getting them all wrong, but who cared? It was magic, that pinprick brilliance overhead, making you feel small in the best way.

There was this one moment of gentle self-reflection, floating there in the tub with a glass of wine, when it hit me: I’m always rushing about, chasing the next thing. Here, doing very little felt revolutionary. No emails pinging, no schedules – just the garden’s quiet hum of bees and birds, the slow rhythm of breathing in sync with the tides below. We wandered the garden paths at snail’s pace, picking blackberries (well, more like inspecting them), reading under the apple tree till eyelids drooped.

Evenings meant easy suppers – pasta thrown together, eaten as the light faded – followed by board games by the fire. The cottage wrapped us in that perfect hush, far enough from the world to unwind properly. By the end of the week, we’d slowed right down, recharged without even trying. If you fancy switching off in style, this neck of the woods is pure gold. Can’t wait to go back and do even less.
