About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – me at the wheel, my partner fiddling with the sat-nav, and our two kids in the back turning every bump into a drama. We’d left the motorway behind, winding through those lush green hills, when disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to photobomb our lane just outside Canonbie. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we all burst out laughing as the woolly escapee trotted off like it owned the place. “Welcome to Scotland,” I chuckled, easing us back on track. By then, the anticipation was bubbling – visions of cosy cottage nights and proper downtime away from the daily grind.

Pulling up the bumpy country track felt like stepping into a secret world. We parked off-road and there it was: this cracking single-storey cottage, all snug and inviting, nestled in the countryside with views that made you breathe easier. First impressions? Spot on. The pretty garden hit us straight away – bursting with plants drawing in bees and butterflies like a wildlife party. Spotting the wood-fired hot tub and pizza oven had the kids whooping already, and that herb garden promised fresh snips for dinner. We tumbled indoors to a contemporary living/dining room that screamed home-from-home: plush velvet corner sofa begging for a collapse, dining table for four, woodburning stove ready to roar, and a Smart TV for rainy-day movies.

Settling in was pure bliss, though not without a dash of cottage chaos. The well-equipped kitchen meant I could whip up pasta while the other half fired up the pizza oven – our first pie came out gloriously wonky, cheese everywhere, but tasting like heaven. Evenings blurred into hot tub sessions under the stars, steam rising as we chatted about nothing much, the kids splashing like otters until pruned fingers sent them packing. Mornings? Herb garden raids for breakfast omelettes, then lazy wanders around Canonbie’s quiet lanes, spotting pheasants and breathing that crisp air.

We kept it simple, true to the relaxed couple-with-kids vibe we craved. A short hop to Gretna Green’s amenities for supplies – blacksmith stories for the little ones, a cream tea that hit the spot. Back at base, the summerhouse became our reading nook, garden our playground. One afternoon, faffing with the hot tub wood (turns out I’m rubbish at stacking it), I had a quiet moment of self-reflection: how often do we chase big holidays when this – muddy wellies, family giggles, and no rush – is the real recharge? The chaos of spilled herbs and overtired toddlers just made it sweeter.

It was one of those stays that lingers, reminding you life’s best bits are the unhurried ones. If you’re after a family escape that’s equal parts chill and cheeky fun, this corner of Dumfries and Galloway delivers in spades. We’re already plotting a return.
