About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – one of those classic Scottish road trips where the satnav decides to have a midlife crisis. We’d just passed Stranraer when it cheerfully announced we’d missed a turn, sending us on a detour through some gloriously empty back lanes lined with tattie fields and the odd sheep giving us the side-eye. Half an hour later, hearts sinking a bit, we finally spotted the sign for the holiday park near Glenluce. By then, I was starving and my other half was humming that annoying tune from the car stereo on repeat. But as we pulled in, all that faded away. The place looked like a proper hidden gem, tucked into rolling countryside with lochs glinting in the distance. First impressions? Spot on – we were grinning like kids at the end of term.

It’s a cracking single-storey lodge, just the ticket for us lot who’d been promising ourselves a proper switch-off. No grand plans, mind – this trip was all about doing bugger all, and boy, did it deliver. We arrived mid-afternoon, dumped the bags, and cracked open a couple of tins in the garden. The sun was doing its best impression of a Mediterranean holiday (rare for Scotland, I know), and there it was: our own little patch of grass, framed by hedges buzzing with bees and views stretching out to the water. I flopped into a lounger with a dog-eared paperback – some trashy thriller I’d been saving – and didn’t move for hours. Bliss.

The next few days blurred into this lovely rhythm of laziness. Mornings started late, with coffee brewed on the go while watching mist lift off the lochs. We’d potter about the garden, spotting birds flitting in the trees, or just sit there with feet up, letting the world slow to a crawl. One afternoon, I swear I nodded off mid-chapter, waking up to find a squirrel eyeing me like I was the intruder. Laughed my socks off at that – me, the great city escapee, out-stared by a nut-hoarder. Evenings were for barbecues on the patio, nothing fancy, just sausages from the park’s shop and a bit of chat about nothing much. The on-site pool and restaurant were tempting, but we barely glanced their way. Why rush when you’ve got this?

It got me thinking, as I lay there on day three, book forgotten, staring at clouds drifting by. Life back home’s a non-stop whirl – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here, time stretched out like warm toffee. No guilt about “making the most of it”; just being was enough. We did dip a toe in the watersports once – a gentle paddle on the loch, more drifting than anything strenuous – but mostly, it was garden lounging and reading till my eyes went square. A mate texted asking if we’d climbed any hills; I replied with a photo of my feet on the table. Proper holiday that.

By the time we packed up, I felt human again – recharged without lifting a finger. If you’re after a spot to properly unwind in Dumfries and Galloway, find yourself a lodge like this. Slow down, crack a book, and let the countryside work its magic. We’re already plotting a return.
