About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and my other half dozing in the passenger seat. We’d been buzzing with anticipation for days, dreaming of cosy nights in and lazy walks along the Solway coast. But about 20 miles from Annan, disaster struck: a puncture. Flat as a pancake, right in the pouring rain. I’m no mechanic, but after 20 sodden minutes faffing with the spare, we were back on track, laughing at how I looked like a drowned rat. Still, it only ramped up the excitement – nothing like a bit of drama to make arrival feel like a triumph.

Pulling up to the cottage just as the clouds parted, I was smitten straight away. It’s one of those classic stone-built numbers, all welcoming with its pitched roof and flower baskets spilling over the porch – proper holiday home vibes, tucked away in a quiet spot near Annan with views that make you breathe easier.

First morning, the weather gods smiled: blue skies, a crisp breeze off the Solway Firth. We laced up our boots and headed out for a gentle hike along the coastal path towards Powfoot. It’s only a couple of miles, but what a cracker – sandy beaches stretching out, seals barking from the mudflats, and skylarks overhead. We pottered along, stopping for flasks of tea and daft photos of each other pretending to outrun the waves. Pure bliss, that first taste of Dumfries and Galloway’s wild edge.

By day two, though, the Scottish weather decided to flex its muscles. Grey skies rolled in overnight, and we woke to a proper downpour lashing the windows. No matter – we’re hardy souls (or stubborn, depending who you ask). Waterproofs on, we tackled the woodland trails around the nearby Solway Coast Discovery Centre, just a short stroll away. Mud up to our knees in places, but the scent of wet pine and the rush of a swollen burn made it magic. We laughed when I slipped on a slick root, ending up backside in a puddle – a classic me moment, reminding myself I’m not 20 anymore and maybe need better grip on these boots.

The rain cleared by afternoon, so we pushed on to the dunes at Powfoot again, this time spotting oystercatchers probing the shore. That’s the joy of walking here: plans bend with the breeze. One day it’s expansive beach rambles under big skies; the next, it’s hunkering down on sheltered paths, chatting about life as the drizzle patters. Evenings back at the cottage were for drying socks by the fire, nursing cups of soup, and plotting the next route – maybe the Annan Viaduct loop if the forecast held.

Reflecting now, those weather-whipped walks were the heart of it all. They stripped away the faff of everyday life, forcing us to adapt and appreciate the raw beauty of the place. Dumfries and Galloway doesn’t do perfect postcard days every time, but that’s what makes it real – and utterly addictive. We’re already eyeing a return, puncture kit at the ready.
