About Edinburgh
We’d stocked up on basics at the local shops en route, but unpacking was a riot. I fancied myself a master chef, declaring I’d whip up a proper Scottish breakfast the next day. Spoiler: my attempt at tattie scones turned into hockey pucks—lesson learned, stick to the easy stuff like frying up black pudding and eggs with a side of Lorne sausage from the fridge. The kitchen was a dream, though, with all the space to muck about without feeling cramped. We cracked open a bottle of Irn-Bru (because why not?) and planned our eats around the Forth Bridges views from the windows—pure inspiration for lazy brunches. First full day, we wandered down to the North Queensferry village high street, no more than a stone’s throw away, and hit the butchers for some prime mince. Pub lunch called next at the Hawes Inn—classic spot right by the shore. I went for the fish and chips, golden batter flaking off perfectly, with mushy peas that hit the spot after our soggy arrival. Dave opted for the haggis, neeps and tatties, and we washed it down with a couple of pints of local ale. Proper hearty stuff, the kind that warms you from the inside out. Back at the flat, I tried my hand at a stew with that mince, chucking in carrots and onions from the nearby greengrocers. It wasn’t Gordon Ramsay, but simmered low while we nattered over tea, it turned out decent—tender and full of flavour, served with crusty bread we’d nabbed from the bakery. Evenings were for pub-hopping locally. The Anchor down by the pier does a cracking Sunday roast—juicy beef, Yorkshire puds the size of saucers, and gravy you could swim in. We’d stumble back tipsy, faces glowing, and raid the fridge for cheese and oatcakes. One night, I got ambitious with pancakes using leftover flour—disaster, they stuck like glue—but we laughed it off with shop-bought shortbread and whisky from the offie. Reflecting on it now, sat here with a cuppa, I realise it’s these daft kitchen fails that made it memorable. No fancy restaurants needed; just good grub, cracking company, and that cosy flat turning simple meals into highlights. Markets were a bonus too—popped over to the weekly one in Inverkeithing, just a quick hop, for fresh smoked salmon and artisan bread. Smoked it ourselves back at base (well, pan-fried, anyway) with scrambled eggs for brekkie. Every bite felt tied to the place—the salty sea air seeping in, the bridges humming outside. By the end of our stay, we’d eaten like kings without straying far, bellies full and hearts content. If you’re after a holiday where the food’s the star, this neck of the woods delivers in spades. Can’t wait to go back for round two. |
