About Edinburgh
I’ll never forget the drive up from Edinburgh airport – we’d hired a cheeky little hatchback, but halfway there, just past Burntisland, the heavens opened and the wipers could barely keep up. I was gripping the wheel like my life depended on it, convinced we’d end up in a ditch, while my partner laughed and fiddled with the radio for some decent tunes. Still, as we crested the hill into Kinghorn, the Firth of Forth sparkled below despite the downpour, and my heart lifted. We were finally here for a proper Scottish getaway, buzzing with that arrival anticipation you only get at the start of a holiday.

Pulling up to our beachfront chalet felt like stumbling into a postcard. Tucked right on the seaside in this cracking little resort, it was all light and airy open-plan living – a plush sofa begging for a collapse, a massive telly for rainy evenings, and a slick white kitchen kitted out with everything you’d need. There was a cosy dining spot too, perfect for cracking open a bottle of fizz. With a king-size and a twin bedroom, it was spot-on for us two, though it’d suit a small family no bother. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, absolutely smashing.

We’d planned epic hikes along the Fife Coastal Path, that rugged stretch hugging the shoreline from Kinghorn to places like Pettycur Bay and maybe even a peek towards Burntisland if the legs held out. Day one, the weather played nice: a crisp breeze off the water, blue skies peeking through. We laced up our boots and headed out, strolling the beachfront path with waves crashing below. It was pure magic – seals barking in the distance, gulls wheeling overhead, and not a soul in sight. We pushed on to the headland, clambering over rocky outcrops for those killer views across the Forth. Felt alive, you know? Proper invigorated.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Next morning, we woke to horizontal rain lashing the windows, turning our ambitious trek to Ravenscraig Park into a non-starter. “Plan B!” I declared, ever the optimist, and we donned waterproofs for a shorter loop along the shore. Muddy paths, wind whipping our faces – we were soaked to the skin in minutes, slipping about like Bambi on ice. Laughed our heads off, though, sheltering under a crumbling cliff for soggy butties and thermos tea. It forced us to slow down, chat properly, instead of just marching on.

By afternoon, the clouds parted like they’d had enough of our moaning, and we nipped out for a sunset amble back along the beach. The changing light on the water was stunning, turning everything golden. One evening, caught in a sudden squall on the path to the harbour, we dashed back dripping, collapsing in hysterics on that inviting sofa with hot mugs of Builder’s. Made me reflect a bit – holidays aren’t about ticking off lists, are they? It’s the daft mishaps, the weather throwing curveballs, that stick with you. Those hikes, rain or shine, bonded us closer to this bonnie corner of Fife. Can’t wait to go back and let the weather have another go at us.
