About Edinburgh
I’ll never forget the drive up from London to Kirkcaldy last autumn – that crisp October chill in the air had me buzzing with anticipation for a cosy Scottish getaway. The journey was mostly a dream, with golden leaves swirling around the A1 like confetti from some woodland party, but then came the mishap: a cheeky flock of sheep decided to block the road just north of the border. There I was, stuck in traffic, munching on a slightly squashed Greggs pasty, wondering if I’d ever make it. Half an hour later, we were off again, and by the time the Firth of Forth came into view under that low, amber sunset, I was grinning like an idiot.

Pulling up to the holiday cottage just as dusk settled, my first impressions were spot on – this charming wee place, all tucked away in a peaceful spot near Kirkcaldy, felt like a hug from the season itself. It’s the sort of traditional cottage that whispers “relax” from the moment you step inside, with its welcoming vibe perfect for autumn’s shorter days.

The time of year shaped everything, really. Those early evenings meant we lit the fire straight away, cracking open a bottle of malt while the wind rustled the trees outside. No mad dashing about; instead, lazy mornings watching mist roll over the nearby fields, the kind of fog that makes everything feel magical and a bit mysterious. We wandered down to Kirkcaldy’s beach – all of five minutes away – where the North Sea crashed against pebbly shores under dramatic grey skies. The air was sharp, laced with salt and that earthy scent of fallen leaves, and we crunched along the path, dodging puddles like pros. It was bracing, the sort of walk that leaves your cheeks rosy and your belly rumbling for soup.

One afternoon, we pottered over to Ravenscraig Park, leaves carpeting the ground in reds and golds – proper autumn palette stuff. We kicked through them like kids, me pretending I wasn’t secretly thrilled by the simplicity of it all. Lunch was fish and chips from a local spot, eaten on a bench with the sea breeze whipping about; nothing fancy, but in that golden light, it tasted like the best meal ever. Evenings were for huddling in with board games and pumpkin soup I attempted (it was more orange sludge than gourmet, but who’s judging?).

There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one night, staring into the flames as rain pattered the windows. Amid the seasonal cosiness, I realised how rare it is to just… be. No screens, no rush – just the cottage, the weather’s moody charm, and good company. Autumn here turned a simple stay into something soul-warming, reminding me why Scotland in this season is pure magic. If you’re after that same glow, book it – you won’t regret a single damp sock.
