About Edinburgh
I’ll never forget the drive up from London to Edinburgh – or rather, the detour that nearly did me in. We’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, my other half navigating on her phone while I gripped the wheel through that relentless M6 rain. Then, disaster: a flat tyre just past Carlisle. There we were, soaked and swearing under our breath (well, she was; I just muttered), wrestling with the spare in the pouring gloom. Two hours later, we were back on the road, but by then the anticipation had kicked in proper – visions of cosy firesides and whisky by the window, escaping the daily grind.

Finally rolling into Penicuik late afternoon, the stress melted away. This little studio tucked in the village felt like a hug from an old mate: compact, modern but with that welcoming Scottish charm, perfect for us two. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of red, and just breathed it all in – the quiet hum of the countryside right on the doorstep, no traffic roar, just birds and the odd bleat from nearby fields.

The next few days were pure bliss, the sort of holiday where you forget what day it is. Mornings started slow: brewing tea in the cute kitchenette, then a wander down to Penicuik’s high street for fresh scones from the bakery. We’d munch them on a bench in the park, watching dog walkers and mums with prams – proper community vibes. Afternoons meant easy rambles along the River Esk, holding hands like daft teenagers, dodging muddy puddles and laughing when I slipped once (she’s still teasing me about that). It’s funny how a bit of chaos – like the time the toaster jammed and set off the smoke alarm mid-brunch – reminds you life’s too short for perfection. We just opened the windows, fanned it out, and carried on with toastless beans on toast.

Evenings were for simple pleasures: cooking up pasta with whatever we’d grabbed from the local Co-op, then curling up with Netflix or a board game by the heater. One night, we ventured to the Penicuik Centre for a low-key curry – nothing fancy, but the naan was divine and the chat with the locals made it feel like home. No big plans, no rushing; just us, rediscovering that spark amid the cottage-y mayhem of spilled wine and forgotten laundry.

Looking back, it was the gentle nudge I needed. Work’s been manic lately, and I’ve caught myself snapping too quick at home. This break? It reset the button – taught me to savour the small stuff, like her giggle when I burned the toast again. If you’re after a chilled couple’s escape near Edinburgh’s buzz but without the hassle, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
