About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday spot in Fife – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us down a narrow farm track that had me white-knuckling the wheel. “This can’t be right,” I muttered to Sarah as we bumped along, dodging what I swear were escaped sheep. Turns out it was, and that minor mishap just added to the anticipation bubbling up as we crested the hill and spotted the cottage nestled right in the heart of a sprawling 400-acre working arable farm. Proper rural bliss, it was, with fields stretching out like a patchwork quilt under that big Scottish sky.

First impressions? Magic. We pulled up, tumbled out, and there it was – this cosy, welcoming house with views that made you forget the world. Just a mile from Pittenweem’s postcard-pretty harbour and two miles from Anstruther’s bustling coastal charm in the East Neuk of Fife. No grand entrance needed; we let ourselves in, kicked off our boots, and immediately felt at home. It was perfect for us two – a relaxed couple break, no kids or chaos beyond our own brand of cottage life mayhem.

We wasted no time diving into the simple pleasures. Mornings started with brews on the go, then a gentle wander down to Pittenweem. That fishing village is a gem – we poked around quirky shops selling handmade fudge and driftwood art, nipped into a friendly inn for a pint of local ale, and watched the boats bob in the harbour. Lunch was fish and chips from one of Anstruther’s legendary spots, eaten on the beach with sand between our toes and gulls eyeing our scraps. “Don’t drop yours,” Sarah teased as I fumbled a chip – classic me, always the klutz.

Afternoons were for ambling the Fife Coastal Path, that stunning trail hugging the cliffs with sea views that stop you in your tracks. We’d spot seals lounging on rocks and breathe in that briny air, feeling miles away from everyday grind. One evening, we caught a sea lifeboat trip out to the Isle of May – what a treat, puffins everywhere and the reserve’s wildlife buzzing with life. Back at the cottage, we’d fire up a simple supper – fresh crab from the harbour, crusty bread, and a cheeky bottle of Eden Mill gin we’d picked up nearby. Chaos crept in when I tried “helping” with the cooking and nearly set off the smoke alarm with overzealous toast, but Sarah just laughed it off. That’s the joy of it, isn’t it? Those little domestic disasters that make you feel alive.

We even squeezed in a visit to the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther – fascinating stuff on the area’s fishing heritage, without feeling like a chore. And Kellie Castle, just close enough, had us wandering its gardens hand-in-hand, pretending we were minor royalty for the day. Golf? We skipped St Andrews’ big courses – too posh for our vibe – but the farm’s peaceful setting was therapy enough.

Looking back, it was a gentle nudge to slow down. Us city folk, rushing about, needed that farm-fresh reset. No grand adventures, just the quiet thrill of coastal walks, decent grub, and each other’s company amid the everyday cottage kerfuffle. Fife’s East Neuk stole a bit of our hearts – we’re already plotting a return.
