About Fife
Pulling up to this spacious period home on the village outskirts felt like stepping into a hug. It’s the sort of place that welcomes 12 of you with open arms – perfect for our big family rabble and a couple of mates who tagged along. Pet-friendly too, which had our daft Labrador, Monty, wagging like mad as he bounded in. First impressions? Spot on. The garden stretched out like an invitation to do absolutely nothing, and after unloading the chaos, that’s exactly what we did. We’d planned grand adventures – St Andrews is only 7.5 miles away with its ancient cathedral and that iconic Old Course, Dundee’s just 6.5 miles for quirky shops and museums, and Tentsmuir Nature Reserve a hop at 5 miles for dune walks and bird-spotting. Craigtoun Country Park’s 8.5 miles off for family larks. But honestly? Who needs it when doing very little feels this good. Our days melted into a blissful rhythm of lazy cottage lounging. Mornings started with brekkie on the patio, tea steaming in the Fife mist, Monty snoring at our feet. I’d crack open a book – some dog-eared thriller I’d been meaning to read for months – and let the hours slip by under the garden’s shady trees. Afternoons were for proper slowing down. The kids (eventually) ditched their screens to sprawl on blankets with picnics, while we adults rotated between hammocks and Adirondack chairs, swapping half-remembered stories from past holidays. One day, I caught myself just staring at the clouds drifting over the fields, wondering why we don’t do this more often. Life back home is a treadmill – emails, deadlines, the works – and here I was, gently chiding myself for always rushing. “You’re on holiday, you daft sod,” I thought. “Breathe.” It was that quiet revelation that made it magic. Evenings brought gentle village vibes; a short wander to the friendly inn for a pint and chips, back before dark to sprawl by the fire with board games that dissolved into laughter. No grand outings needed – the joy was in the garden’s hush, the rustle of pages turning, the simple art of switching off. Fife’s got all the gems nearby if you fancy, but this cottage taught us the real treat is savouring the slow. We left fatter, happier, and plotting a return. Proper holiday that. |
