About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to St Monans – what was meant to be a breezy jaunt from Edinburgh turned into a proper comedy of errors. Picture this: me, map app on the dash, belting out some dodgy 90s playlist, when suddenly the heavens open. Torrential rain hammers down, turning the A915 into a makeshift river, and wouldn’t you know it, my windscreen wipers decide that’s the perfect moment to pack up. I’m squinting through the blur, convinced I’m about to end up in someone’s tattie field, pulling over twice to give them a futile whack. By the time I spot the village sign, I’m soaked from leaping out to check the tyres (paranoia, thy name is me), and my nerves are as frayed as an old tea towel.

But oh, the anticipation as I finally trundled down that narrow lane – heart racing a bit, imagining cosy firesides and sea views after the chaos. Pulling up to the property, I was gobsmacked. Nestled in this peaceful private spot with splendid uninterrupted views over the harbour, it’s the sort of place that makes you exhale all the day’s daftness. A charming little holiday cottage, done up in that effortlessly stylish seaside way – think crisp whites, comfy tartan throws, and windows that frame the water like a painting. First impressions? Bloody brilliant (well, almost – I won’t say it). Stepping inside, dripping wet and grinning like an eejit, I dumped my bags and made a beeline for the view. St Monans stretched out below, all quaint fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, the Fife Coastal Path snaking along the cliffs. It was love at first sight.

We wasted no time shaking off the arrival madness. A quick change into dry clothes, and we wandered down to the pretty little harbour, where the salty air hit like a tonic. Popped into one of the local friendly pubs for a pint – the chatter was all about the day’s catch and weekend walks. Dinner that night was at a cracking spot in the village, fresh seafood that tasted like it leapt straight from the sea. Next morning, with the wipers mysteriously fixed (don’t ask), we hit the Coastal Path for an amble – proper bracing stuff, with gulls wheeling overhead and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. Stumbled across a quirky shop selling handmade fudge and nautical knick-knacks; I snaffled some for the road.

There’s something about this corner of the East Neuk that sneaks up on you. After the drive’s farce, lounging on the terrace with a cuppa, harbour glinting below, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life’s too short for dodgy wipers and stress – why not trade the grind for places like this? We even eyed up the water sports down at Elie, but settled for beachcombing and a cycle along the paths instead. Fishermen dotted the harbour, rods at the ready, and I half-fancied joining them next time. St Monans isn’t flashy, but it’s got heart – quirky shops, ace eateries, and that unbeatable sense of escape. If you’re after a base that’s equal parts peaceful and packed with coastal charm, this is it. Can’t wait to go back – minus the rain, hopefully.
