About 40 Main Street.

Aberdour is a medieval seaside village opposite Edinburgh across the Firth of Forth. Its main street lies inland, linked by narrow lanes to the coast. Originally two settlements, Wester and Easter Aberdour, around the harbour where the Dour Burn meets the Forth, they merged with the late 19th-century railway. The 12th-century Aberdour Castle, one of Scotland’s oldest stone castles, features a walled garden, terraces, and beehive dovecot added by the Douglases. Managed by Historic Scotland.

About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to Fife – we’d set off from Edinburgh full of beans, dreaming of lazy beach days, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a massive tailback just past the Forth Road Bridge. Turned out some numpty had decided to have a barney with their wing mirror right in the middle lane. We sat there for a good half hour, tutting and fiddling with the radio, but honestly, it just built the anticipation. By the time we trundled into Aberdour, that seaside village glow was pulling us in like a magnet.

Spotting the off-road parking space was a godsend after the faff, and even the flight of stairs up to the first-floor apartment felt like a mini workout we didn’t mind. Stepping inside? Blimey, what a treat. It’s this sophisticated two-bedroom spot, perfect for me and my mate, with a Scandinavian-style living/dining room that just screams ‘relax’. That corner sofa swallowed us whole as we flicked on the Smart TV, and the galley kitchen had everything for knocking up a simple supper at the wooden dining table. First impressions? Spot on – cosy, clean, and right in the heart of it all, with two sandy beaches just a daunder away.

But here’s the thing: we didn’t do much at all, and it was bloody marvellous. Fife’s got its charms – Aberdour’s got a cracking little silver beach for a gentle stroll, and the harbour’s always got folk pottering about with boats – but we were all about doing nowt. Mornings kicked off with a slow brew in the kitchen, then we’d flop onto that sofa with books we’d been meaning to crack open for ages. I devoured a battered old crime novel while the other one nodded off to some nature doc on the telly. Lunch was whatever we rustled up – cheese toasties, mostly – eaten gazing out the window at the village buzz.

Afternoons melted into the garden area downstairs, where we’d snag a bench, crack open a flask of tea, and just watch the world go by. Seagulls squawking, kids building sandcastles on the beach below, the odd dog walker ambling past. No rush, no plans. One day we wandered five minutes to the beach, dipped our toes in the chilly Forth, and that was our big adventure. Back for more sofa time, maybe a nap. Evening? Home-cooked pasta, a glass of wine, and an early night with the window cracked for that salty sea air.

Looking back, it was dead therapeutic. Life’s always go-go-go back home – emails, deadlines, the lot – and I caught myself thinking, why don’t I make more space for this slowness? No grand hikes or tourist traps, just proper downtime in a cracking spot. Aberdour and that apartment nailed it for recharging the batteries. If you fancy switching off proper, Fife’s your answer. We’re already plotting a return.
