About Hay Loft.

Anstruther, principal village on Fife’s East Neuk coast, was once two burghs split by the Dreel Burn. Founded as a fishing village, it boomed in the Scottish herring industry. The Scottish Fisheries Museum overlooks the busy harbour. Now tourist-friendly, it boasts cafés, bars, galleries, restaurants and award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar. Harbour trips go to the Isle of May for puffins and seals. Edinburgh lies across the Forth; the Secret Bunker is nearby. Enjoy coastal walks and golf at St Andrews.

About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to Fife – we’d packed the car to the gills with kids’ toys, wellies, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes near St Andrews. Picture this: me white-knuckling the wheel as a tractor the size of a house ambles along at snail pace, the kids chanting “Are we there yet?” from the back, and my other half trying not to laugh while handing out ginger biscuits to keep the peace. Classic family road trip chaos, but by the time we crested that final hill and spotted the sea twinkling ahead, all was forgiven. Pittenweem was just begging to be explored, and I could already feel the holiday magic kicking in.

Pulling up to our first-floor, two-storey apartment right in the heart of this gorgeous coastal village, I let out a proper sigh of relief. Overlooking the bustling harbour and a nearby boat workshop, it had that perfect “we’ve arrived somewhere special” vibe from the off. Stepping inside, the open-plan living space wrapped us up like a warm hug – kitchen, dining bit, and sitting area all flowing together, ideal for our ragtag crew. The kids made a beeline for the sofa, Smart TV flickering on with some cartoon nonsense, while I unpacked the groceries and rustled up beans on toast. Simple pleasures, eh? That first evening, we sprawled out with a stack of books and board games from the shelf, harbour lights twinkling outside the window. No fancy plans, just us lot soaking it in.

The next few days blurred into that dreamy cottage life rhythm we crave on family breaks. Mornings kicked off with brekkie at the table, plotting the day over cups of tea while fishing boats chugged out from the harbour below. We wandered down to Pittenweem’s colourful harbour – the kids utterly mesmerised by the crab pots and salty old fishermen spinning yarns. A short stroll took us to the sandy stretch at Abercrombie, where we built wonky sandcastles and paddled in the chilly Forth, coming home sandy and shattered for pasta and a family card game that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations (mostly from me, guilty as charged).

One afternoon, we ambled over to Anstruther, just a mile and a half up the coast – fish and chips from that legendary chippy, eaten straight from the paper on the beach, with the sea breeze whipping our hair. Pure bliss. Back at the apartment, the chaos peaked when the little ones turned the living space into a den fort with cushions and blankets – I joined in, of course, pretending to be the dragon they had to defeat. Lying there amid the rubble later, I had a quiet moment of reflection: these are the bits that stick, aren’t they? Not the Instagram-perfect holidays, but the messy, joyful ones where you’re all together, unplugged from the world, rediscovering what family really means.

We hated leaving, but Fife’s East Neuk has wormed its way into our hearts. If you’re after a relaxed family escape with harbour views, sea air, and zero pressure, this is your spot. Can’t wait to go back.
