About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to Pittenweem – that classic Scottish holiday start where the satnav decides to play silly buggers just as you cross the Forth Bridge. Mine cheerfully guided me down a narrow lane that turned out to be a dead end at some farmer’s gate, leaving me reversing into a hedge with the car boot stuffed full of crisps and wine. A proper faff, but by the time I’d untangled myself, the sun was dipping low over the Fife coast, and anticipation bubbled up. What if this was the spot to finally switch off?

Pulling up to the upper two floors of this Grade II listed fisherman’s cottage from 1850, right on the seafront of Midshore, I was smitten straight away. It’s got that perfect charm – think cosy nooks with uninterrupted sea views from every room, two double bedrooms that scream lazy lie-ins, and a prime perch in this historic fishing village. Named after being by the waters of May, with the Isle of May twinkling out there like a promise of peace, it felt like the universe had booked me in for a proper unwind.

From the off, it was all about doing sod all, and loving every minute. Mornings kicked off with tea on the go, padding out to the garden – a sweet little patch hugging the shore where the waves lapped close enough to hear over your first sip. I’d flop into a chair with a dog-eared paperback, the kind you’ve lugged around for years without cracking open. The sea breeze flipped the pages lazily, and gulls wheeled overhead, squawking like they were jealous of my schedule: zero plans.

Afternoons melted into the same glorious nothing. A potter down to the harbour maybe, just 200 yards away, to watch the fishing boats bob and the odd crabber haul in the day’s catch – but only if I fancied it. Mostly, I didn’t. Back at the cottage, it was lunch on a tray by the window, staring out at the endless Firth of Forth. One day, I swear I spent three hours tracing cloud shapes while half-reading a thriller that’d gone stale by chapter four. Pure bliss. The views pulled you in – that vast, moody sea stretching to the horizon, changing from slate grey to gold with the light. No rush, no scroll, just breathing it all in.

Evenings were for slowing right down. A simple supper – smoked haddock from the village shop, because you’re in Fife, aren’t you? – then curling up with a glass of something decent, feet up, letting the day’s non-events sink in. The cottage wrapped around you like an old friend, every window framing that Isle of May silhouette against the sunset. I had a quiet moment one night, gazing out, realising how knackered I’d been from the usual grind. This place didn’t demand hikes or selfies; it just let you be. A gentle nudge that joy’s in the pause.

By the end of the week, I’d done less than ever and felt more alive. Pittenweem’s magic isn’t in ticking boxes – it’s in those lazy cottage days that recharge your soul. If you’re after the same, pack light and go.
