About The Howff.

Anstruther, principal village on Fife’s East Neuk coast, was once two burghs split by the Dreel Burn. Founded as a fishing village, it boomed in the Scottish herring industry. The Scottish Fisheries Museum by the harbour documents this history. Now tourist-friendly, it boasts cafés, bars, galleries, and the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar. Harbour trips go to the Isle of May for puffins and seals. Edinburgh lies across the Forth; the Secret Bunker is nearby. Enjoy coastal walks and golf at St Andrews.

About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to Anstruther – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Edinburgh turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through every narrow back lane in Fife, and just as we hit the East Neuk coast, a sudden downpour turned the roads into a slip-and-slide. My other half was gripping the dashboard like it was a lifeline, and I nearly rear-ended a tractor trundling along with a load of fishing nets. “This better be worth it,” she muttered, as we finally spotted the seafront through the rain-lashed windscreen. Heart racing a bit, I have to admit I was buzzing with that mix of anticipation and mild dread – you know, the kind where you’ve splashed out on a holiday let and pray it’s not a damp flop.

Pulling up outside, though, all that stress melted away like ice cream on a hot day. There it was, this cracking two-bedroom apartment smack in the heart of bustling Anstruther, the sort of spot that screams perfect for a wee family getaway or a cosy couples’ retreat. We dashed through the drizzle, keys in hand, and stepped into the warmest welcome imaginable. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The sitting room hit me right between the eyes – all comfy seating arranged just so, stylish bits and bobs that made it feel lived-in rather than show-home sterile, and that woodburner-style fireplace begging to be lit for a proper chill-out session. I could already picture us sprawled there with a cuppa, flicking on the telly to catch some rubbish quiz show while the rain pattered outside.

We dumped the bags and poked around, still buzzing from the drive’s chaos. The kitchen was a dream for any self-respecting cook – properly kitted out with everything you’d need to rustle up a hearty fish pie or some local smoked haddock, none of that half-arsed holiday cottage nonsense. And the dining area? Elegant without being fussy, ready for a lazy supper where you linger over stories and second helpings. Upstairs, the bedrooms were spot-on – snug beds that promised proper kip after a day out.

That first evening, we wandered just a stone’s throw to the harbour, grabbing fish and chips from one of Anstruther’s legendary spots, the kind so fresh you taste the sea. Sat on the sea wall, munching as the clouds cleared, I had a proper moment of reflection. Here I was, after that madcap arrival, feeling utterly content in this little Fife gem. Sometimes life’s small mishaps are just the universe’s way of making the good bits shine brighter. We spent the next days pottering – a gentle stroll to nearby Cellarhead Beach for pebble-skipping, popping into the Scottish Fisheries Museum for a dose of local history (did you know Anstruther once launched ships for Arctic whaling? Wild), and even a cheeky round at the miniature crazy golf by the water. Light-hearted fun, no faff, just us unwinding.

Honestly, if you’re after a fuss-free base in Fife’s East Neuk, this is it. The arrival palaver made the first impressions all the sweeter – proof that a bit of chaos often leads to the best stories. Can’t wait to go back.
