About Wee Jules By The Sea.

Anstruther, principal village on Fife’s East Neuk coast, was once two burghs split by the Dreel Burn. Founded as a fishing village, it boomed in the Scottish herring industry. The Scottish Fisheries Museum by the busy harbour documents its past. Now tourist-friendly, it boasts cafés, bars, galleries, restaurants and the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar. Harbour trips go to the Isle of May for puffins and seals. Edinburgh lies across the Forth; the Secret Bunker is nearby. Enjoy coastal walks and golf at St Andrews.

About Fife
I finally made it to Anstruther after what felt like the world's most scenic detour. Driving up from Edinburgh, I took a wrong turn somewhere near Kirkcaldy – classic me, following the sat-nav's cheeky shortcut through a sleepy village that had more sheep than signposts. Ended up stuck behind a tractor for ten minutes, laughing at myself while munching on a slightly squished Greggs pasty. But as the East Neuk coastline came into view, all that faded. Those golden beaches and bobbing fishing boats had me buzzing with anticipation – this was going to be pure bliss.

Pulling up to the holiday cottage, I was smitten straight away. It's this charming seaside spot, done up in a lovely palette of blues and aquas with cheeky under-the-sea touches everywhere – think quirky fish ornaments and wave-patterned cushions that make you feel like you've dived into a mermaid's lounge. The sitting room is an absolute dream: I flopped onto the squidgiest sofa imaginable, remote in hand, already plotting my TV marathon. No rush, no plans – just me, a cuppa, and the sound of gulls outside.

The real joy, though, has been doing sod all, and loving every lazy second. Mornings start slow: I'd brew coffee in the cracking kitchen (it's got every gadget you could wish for, making even my dodgy scrambled eggs look gourmet), then wander out to the garden. It's a proper suntrap, with comfy chairs tucked among the flowers, overlooking the harbour. I'd settle in with a book – some trashy thriller I picked up in St Andrews – and let hours slip by. The sea breeze ruffles the pages, boats chug past, and suddenly three o'clock rolls around without me noticing. Who needs an itinerary when you've got this?

Afternoons were for gentle potterings. A short amble down to Anstruther's harbour for fish and chips from the famous chippie – wrapped hot and salty, eaten on a bench watching the world go by. Back at the cottage, I'd curl up in that dining nook off the kitchen, picking at leftovers while scrolling through photos of seals basking on the rocks nearby. No hikes, no tours – just lingering in the garden as the sun dipped, sipping a GandT and reflecting on how I've spent years rushing about like a headless chicken at work. Here, time stretches out; it's like the tide's teaching you to breathe deeper. I caught myself grinning at nothing one evening, feet up, book forgotten – proper content.

Evenings melted into more of the same: sofa lounging, a bit of telly (that new BBC drama hit the spot), maybe a chapter before nodding off. Waking to the same unhurried rhythm felt like a gift. Fife's coast has this magic for slowing you right down, and this little haven nailed it. If you're after recharging without the faff, it's spot on – families or just us couples craving peace. Can't wait to return and do even less.
