About Fort William
I’ll never forget the drive up to Fort William – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past the outskirts, I took a wrong turn onto a narrow single-track road. Cue a comedy of errors: reversing into a passing sheep farmer’s Land Rover (no damage, thank goodness, just a sheepish wave and a chuckle from him). By the time we arrived, hearts still thumping a bit, the clouds were parting, and Loch Linnhe sparkled like it was rolling out the red carpet. I could already feel the anticipation bubbling – this was going to be our lazy Highland escape.

Pulling up to our third-floor apartment, we parked off-road right outside, grabbed the bags, and climbed the internal stairs, the sea air nipping at our heels. First impressions? Spot on. It’s a tasteful four-bedroom spot, perfect for our group of six mates, with elegant interiors that screamed cosy without trying too hard. The open-plan living space became our instant hub – plush sofas, a telly for rainy afternoons, and a kitchen kitted out for minimal effort brews. Walking distance to the local shop and pub? Genius. We stocked up on essentials (wine, cheese, more wine) and barely looked back.

From that moment, it was all about doing sod all, and loving every second. No grand plans, no Ben Nevis hikes for us lot – we were here to switch off, proper-like. Mornings kicked off with lazy brews on the balcony, watching ferries chug across the loch, gulls wheeling about. The garden area downstairs became our secret chill spot – nothing fancy, just a patch of green with benches where we’d flop with books and flasks of tea. I devoured a battered old paperback I’d brought, something daft and escapist, losing hours to plot twists while the others dozed or fiddled with podcasts.

Afternoons blurred into that delicious Highland haze. We’d wander five minutes to the pub for a pint and a blether with locals about the weather (eternal topic), then back for sofa sprawls. One day, I caught myself staring out the window at the water, mug gone cold, and had a proper moment of reflection: when did life get so frantic? Here, time stretched like toffee. No emails pinging, no rush – just the joy of pottering, sharing daft stories from our London grind, and letting the world slow to a crawl.

Evenings were pure bliss: simple suppers thrown together (pasta, because who fancies faffing?), then curling up with a film or board games till eyelids drooped. One night, a mate tried teaching us Highland dancing in the living room – ended in fits of laughter and stubbed toes. No itinerary, no FOMO, just recharging in the best way.

Packing up felt bittersweet, but driving off that final morning, loch mist rising, I knew we’d nailed it. Sometimes, the best holiday is the one where you do bugger all – and Fort William delivered it in spades. Can’t wait to return and do it all over again.
