About Fort William
I’ll never forget the drive up to Fort William – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the central belt turned into a proper comedy of errors. Picture this: me, white-knuckling the steering wheel as the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly just past Glencoe, insisting we take a “scenic detour” that was basically a single-track road with more sheep than tarmac. Then, to top it off, I misjudged a pothole and ended up with the wing mirror kissing a passing hedge. “Brilliant,” I muttered, pulling over to untangle the mess while rain started spitting down like the Highlands were personally offended by my presence. By the time we crested the hill towards the outskirts, I was frazzled, caffeine-deprived, and questioning why we hadn’t just booked a staycation in Blackpool.

But oh, the anticipation kicked in hard as we rounded the bend. There it was, nestled right on the edge of town amid that wild Highland sprawl – our duplex apartment, glowing like a beacon against the moody skies. I could already taste the fresh air, that crisp, piney scent that hits you like a Highland welcome committee. Parking up was another mini-drama; the spot was tight, and I parallel-parked like a learner driver, earning a sympathetic wave from a neighbour walking their dog. Heart racing, we grabbed our bags and dashed through the drizzle to the door.

Stepping inside? Pure magic. The warm interiors wrapped around us like a cosy hug – none of that stark, hotel-y vibe, just charming, lived-in charm that made us drop our bags and exhale. The ground-floor bathroom caught my eye first, with its bath and shower-over setup, promising a proper soak after days of tramping about. Up the stairs, the space opened up into this idyllic couple’s retreat: plush seating by a window framing the hills, a kitchenette begging for fry-up experiments, and a bedroom that screamed “sleep like the dead.” We felt at home instantly, the chaos of the journey melting away as we cracked open a window to let in that glorious Highland air. First impressions? Spot on – it was the perfect escape pod from life’s grind.

We didn’t waste time; a quick freshen-up and we were out exploring on foot. A ten-minute wander took us to the banks of Loch Linnhe, where the water shimmered under the emerging sun, seals bobbing about like cheeky locals. Popped into town for fish and chips at a harbourside spot – crispy batter, mushy peas, the works – then strolled the high street, dodging tartan shops and peering into Nevis Range gondola posters. Back at the apartment that evening, we cooked up a storm (pasta, nothing fancy), cracked a bottle of red, and watched the light fade over the Ben Nevis foothills from the sofa. No signal stress, just us and the quiet.

Looking back, that bumpy arrival was a blessing in disguise. It made the warmth of the place hit even harder, reminding me how daft I can be with directions but how rewarding it is to unplug and let the Highlands work their spell. If you’re after a laid-back base for hill walks, lochside dawdles, or just breathing easy, this is your spot. We left buzzing for more – mishaps and all.
