About Fort William
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot near Fort William – we’d packed the car to bursting with kids’ wellies, board games, and enough crisps to siege a castle. Halfway there, just past the twisty bits around Glencoe, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour down some single-track road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the Jacobites. Cue mild panic from me (“Are we lost in the wilderness?”) and the kids chanting “Adventure! Adventure!” from the back. Twenty minutes later, we emerged unscathed, and honestly, it set the perfect tone for our relaxed family escape.

Pulling up to the apartment, hearts racing with that arrival buzz – you know, when everything feels possible after hours on the road – we were gobsmacked by the first impressions. It’s this cosy elevated bolthole overlooking the moody waters of Loch Linnhe, just a mile from Ardgour village on the mainland. We clambered up the external steps to a decked terrace with views stretching to the Corran Ferry on a crisp morning. Inside, the open-plan living room hit us with its contemporary vibe, dual-aspect windows flooding the place with light that bounced off bright colours and cosy textures. Perfect for a family needing a base to flop and recharge.

We weren’t here for epic hikes (though the kids dragged us on a few gentle ones along the lochside paths). No, this was pure cottage life chaos – the good kind. Mornings started with porridge splattered everywhere while we watched seals bob in the loch from the terrace, steaming mugs in hand. One day, we nipped over the Corran Ferry to explore the sandy bits at Camusdarach Beach, just a short hop away – building lopsided sandcastles and dodging jellyfish, with the kids shrieking in delight as waves tickled their toes. Laughter echoed louder than the gulls.

Afternoons were for simple pleasures: messing about in the kitchen with local bacon butties (sourced from the Ardgour shop), then sprawling on the sofa for Uno marathons that always ended in accusations of cheating. The otherworldly light over Loch Linnhe at dusk was magic – we’d barbecue sausages on a portable grill out on the deck, faces glowing from the flames, while the kids chased each other in circles. Chaos reigned when the youngest tipped a full bowl of popcorn off the table, but who cares? That’s the joy of it.

One evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, I sat there with a cuppa, watching my lot finally conk out after a day of pebble-skipping at the water’s edge. Gentle self-reflection hit me: in the rush of daily life back home, we forget these pockets of nothing-much. No schedules, just loch views and family squabbles melting into giggles. We even spotted otters one misty morning – or maybe it was just logs, but the kids swear it was otters.

A week flew by in that blissful bubble, leaving us with sandy socks, full bellies, and memories of Highland simplicity. If you fancy ditching the grind for some lochside cottage mayhem, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
