About Fort William
I’ll never forget the drive up to Spean Bridge – that winding A82 hugging Loch Linnhe, with the mist rolling off the water like a scene from a proper Highland postcard. Me and the missus had packed the car to bursting with enough crisps, tea bags, and board games to see us through a siege, dreaming of cosy nights by the fire. But about ten miles out, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our windscreen was its personal trampoline. No harm done, thank goodness, just a bit of woolly fluff and a story to tell the grandkids. We pulled over for a brew and a laugh, hearts racing but already buzzing with that arrival anticipation.

Pulling into the drive of this cracking detached house felt like winning the holiday lottery. Six off-road spaces meant no faffing with parking, and as we stepped out, bam – those jaw-dropping views of the Ben Nevis range hit us like a cold dram. Mature gardens all around, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and us proper gawping like first-time tourists. Inside, the hallway swept us off our feet: a grand piano begging for a terrible rendition of Highland Cathedral, and comfy seating that screamed ‘kick off your boots’. We wandered into the sitting room, where bay windows framed the mountains like a living painting. Three plush sofas invited us to flop down by the crackling open fire, telly humming softly in the corner. First impressions? Bloody marvellous – or rather, absolutely spot on for a chilled-out couple’s escape.

We weren’t there for mad adventures, mind – just proper cottage life chaos in the best way. Mornings started with lazy brews on the patio, watching deer wander the nearby nature reserves. A short hop to Gairlochy for a gentle watersports paddle on the Caledonian Canal had us giggling like kids, me capsizing on purpose to splash her. Afternoons were for ambling the local paths, picking brambles and pretending we’re Bear Grylls, though I’m more teddy than grizzly. Evenings? Pure bliss: fire roaring, her feet up, me fiddling on that piano (appallingly, I might add), with a stew bubbling away. The house swallowed us up in comfort – space for sprawling without feeling lost, perfect for two souls craving simplicity.

There was this one moment, staring out at Ben Nevis as the sun dipped, when it hit me: we’re always rushing about down south, aren’t we? Chasing jobs, kids’ football, the next deadline. Up here, time slows right down. No signal half the time, no distractions – just us, the hills, and the quiet joy of doing bugger all brilliantly. A bit of self-reflection over a whisky, and I reckon we’ve cracked the code to recharging. If you’re after that relaxed family-couple vibe – well, not family this time, but you get me – this spot near Fort William is pure magic. Simple pleasures, a dash of chaos, and views that’ll stick with you. We’re already plotting a return.
