About Glasgow
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday cottage near Eaglesham – we’d been buzzing with excitement about escaping the daily grind for a proper Scottish break, just me and the wife, but of course, nothing’s ever straightforward. About halfway from Glasgow, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a narrow lane that turned into a muddy quagmire after a sneaky shower. There we were, sliding about like we were in a low-budget rally, me gripping the wheel and her laughing so hard she nearly spilled her flask of tea. “This is your idea of romance?” she teased. We made it out unscathed, though, and by the time we crested the hill into the village, the sun was peeking through, turning everything golden.

Pulling up to the cottage, nestled right on the edge of this picture-postcard conservation village, our first impressions were spot on. It’s the sort of place that whispers “relax” from the moment you step out – cosy, traditional style with that welcoming glow from the windows, surrounded by rolling countryside that makes you breathe deeper. Eaglesham itself is a gem, with its splendid long green, the Orry, right at the heart. We arrived mid-afternoon, bags barely unpacked, and already we were strolling arm-in-arm down there, dodging a couple of locals playing crowns on the bowling green. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass and baking bread from one of the friendly inns nearby.

Settling in felt like slipping into an old, comfy jumper. The cottage was perfect for us – a relaxed family-couple vibe, no kids or grand chaos this time, just us pottering about. Mornings started with lazy brews on the patio, watching birds flit about, then we’d wander the village’s indie shops and pop into a gallery or two. One eatery had the best homemade scones; we demolished a plate with clotted cream, giggling about how we’d earned it after our “rally” adventure. Afternoons were for simple pleasures: a gentle ramble around the Orry for a picnic of cheese and crackers, or heading to nearby Rouken Glen Country Park, just a few miles away. That place is magic – lush walks, a playground we pretended was for us, and a wee café for ice creams that tasted like summer.

There was a spot of cottage life chaos, mind you. One evening, trying to cook a romantic pasta, the oven decided to rebel, filling the place with smoke alarms wailing like banshees. We ended up ordering from the local inn instead, eating on the green under the stars – turned out better than planned. It made me reflect a bit, sat there with her hand in mine: we’re always chasing big holidays, but these quiet moments, the mishaps and laughter, that’s the real recharge. No need for fancy golf courses or zoos when you’ve got village charm and each other.

By the end of our stay, we didn’t want to leave. Eaglesham’s got that pull – excellent spots to eat, quirky shops, and trails that beg for more walks. If you’re after a chilled couple’s break, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
