About Glencoe
We'd been dreaming of Glencoe for ages, that perfect spot for a cosy couple's getaway, so when we finally set off from Fort William, the excitement was bubbling. The drive along Loch Linnhe's edge was stunning, mist clinging to the hills like a soft blanket, but wouldn't you know it, about halfway there, the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us down a narrow single-track road that felt more like a sheep's personal runway. We ended up reversing for what seemed like miles while a farmer in a Land Rover gave us that classic Highland side-eye. Laughing our heads off, we eventually found our way, arriving just as the sun dipped low, painting the water gold. First impressions? Magic. Right by the Corran Narrows, opposite the brooding drama of Glen Coe, it felt like we'd stumbled into a postcard.

The cottage itself is this stylish little gem, sympathetically updated to feel like a warm hug rather than a museum piece – perfect romantic bolthole for us two, without a whiff of pretension. We dumped our bags and cracked open a bottle of red on the porch, watching the light fade over the loch. No kids, no schedules, just us and the simple joy of pottering about. Next morning, we laced up our boots for a gentle wander along the shore paths – miles of them right on the doorstep, easy enough for a relaxed amble but with those jaw-dropping views of the West Highlands that make you stop and breathe deep. We spotted a couple of otters playing in the shallows, which had us grinning like kids. Lunch was a chaotic affair in the kitchen: I tried whipping up a Scotch broth from scratch, but ended up with more veg on the floor than in the pot. My other half just chuckled and ordered fish and chips from the local spot – cottage life at its messy best.

Afternoons blurred into lazy hikes up the lower slopes of the nearby Corbies, nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for cheese toasties by the fire. One evening, we nipped over the Corran ferry for a pint in a waterside pub, seals bobbing about as if putting on a show. The chaos peaked when the heavens opened mid-walk – typical Scottish weather – and we dashed back soaked, turning it into an impromptu dance party in the lounge with some cracking tunes and drying towels. Golden eagles soared overhead another day, too distant for photos but close enough to thrill, and we even glimpsed deer grazing at dusk.

Looking back, it was those little imperfections that made it – the sat-nav farce, the kitchen disasters, the sudden downpours. In our hectic lives back home, we rarely switch off like that. Glencoe stripped it all back to simple pleasures: fresh air, each other's company, and the wild beauty right outside. If you're after a cheerful escape as a couple, walkers or just nature fans, this corner of Scotland delivers. We left refreshed, already plotting our return.
