About Glencoe
I’ll never forget the drive up to Glencoe that crisp autumn morning—me at the wheel, my wife Sue navigating with that trusty OS map app, both of us buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement. We’d left Fort William early, figuring we’d beat the traffic, but about halfway in, disaster struck: a cheeky Highland sheep decided our hire car made a perfect scratching post. Thump! We pulled over, hearts racing, only to find a woolly intruder trotting off into the mist like nothing happened. No damage, thank goodness, just a good laugh and a reminder that out here, nature’s got the right of way.

By the time we crested the pass into Kinlochleven, the anticipation was electric. Nestled in this secluded spot with those uninterrupted views of the Mamores, our architect-designed retreat—straight out of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, no less—looked even better than the photos. It’s this rare Scandinavian-inspired hideaway, all luxury and tranquillity, newly built to the highest standards. We stepped inside and whoa—first impressions were spot on. Cosy yet sleek, with massive windows framing the mountains like a living painting. Dropping our bags, we cracked open a bottle of fizz on the deck, toasting the peace that hit us like a warm hug.

The next few days were pure, unhurried bliss—a relaxed couple’s break, just us against the world (and the midges, but more on that later). Mornings started slow: brewing coffee in the plush kitchen, then ambling out for a gentle wander along the old railway path by Loch Leven. It’s flat and easy, perfect for holding hands and chatting about nothing much, with the water lapping and those peaks looming dramatically. We’d spot the odd red squirrel darting about, which always made Sue coo like a kid.

Lunches were cottage-life chaos at its finest—me attempting to rustle up a hearty Cullen skink with smoked haddock from the local shop in Kinlochleven, only for the smoke alarm to join the party halfway through. We salvaged it with a few giggles and switched to cheese toasties, scoffing them on the sofa while rain pattered the windows. Afternoons meant short hikes up to the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall, just a mile or so away—puffing up the path, rewarded by that thundering cascade and rainbows in the spray. Back home, we’d light the fire (it drew like a dream), curl up with books, and watch the light shift over the Mamores. Simple pleasures, really—board games that descended into playful arguments over Monopoly rules, or stargazing from the hot tub under that massive Highland sky.

One evening, as the sun dipped behind the ridges, painting everything gold, I caught myself reflecting gently. Life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and to-do lists, but here? It stripped it all back to what matters: each other, a hot cuppa, and mountains that make you feel small in the best way. Sure, we had our chaotic moments—like the time Sue’s wellies got stuck in the bog on a wee forest stroll—but that’s the charm of it. No grand plans, just us, this stunning hideaway, and Glencoe working its magic. If you’re after a proper reset, book it. You won’t regret a second.
