About Glencoe
I’ll never forget the drive up to Glencoe – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our Highland getaway. We’d set off from Fort William in high spirits, me behind the wheel of our rented hatchback, sat-nav chirping away like an overexcited guide dog. The plan was simple: a quick scoot along the A82 to our duplex apartment on the outskirts, bags packed with wellies and whisky dreams. But oh no, Scotland had other ideas. About halfway there, the heavens opened – I mean proper biblical rain, the kind that turns windscreens into abstract paintings. Then, just as we rounded a bend with those brooding mountains looming, a sheep decided to play chicken. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we skidded to a halt inches from its woolly backside. “Welcome to the Highlands,” laughed my other half, while I sat there white-knuckled, wondering if our holiday was cursed before it began.

By the time we pulled up to the place, we were soaked, frazzled, and giggling like idiots. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all morning – visions of cosy evenings by the fire, hikes through misty glens, that fresh Highland air hitting you like a cold pint on a hot day. Would it live up to the hype? Stepping out into the drizzle, lugging our sodden bags up the path, the glorious Highland breeze slapped us first, all piney and invigorating, cutting through the chaos. And then we were inside. Blimey, what a relief. The warm interiors wrapped around us like a hug from an old mate – charming, welcoming, the sort of spot that makes you kick off your boots and sigh. Ground floor straight away: a cracking bathroom with a bath and a shower over it, because who wants to choose when you can have both after a day like that?

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped our bags and just soaked it in – this delightful duplex setup felt tailor-made for us two, a proper escape from the daily grind. No city noise, just the whisper of wind outside and those epic views peeking through the windows towards Glencoe’s dramatic peaks. We’d timed it perfectly for a late lunch, so I rustled up some cheese toasties in the kitchen while my partner ran a bath to thaw out. Laughing about the sheep incident over steaming mugs of tea, I had one of those quiet moments: you know, realising how daft it is to stress over little mishaps when you’re in a place this magical. It’s the Highlands, after all – wild, unpredictable, and all the better for it.

That afternoon, we ventured out just a short hop to the Glencoe Visitor Centre, still buzzing from the drive’s drama. The exhibits on the massacre and geology were fascinating, but it was the short walk afterwards, dodging puddles along the River Coe, that sealed it. Back at the apartment by dusk, we cracked open a bottle of local malt, feet up, watching the light fade over the hills. No grand adventures yet, just pure, unfiltered bliss. If you’re after a couples’ bolthole amid the western Highlands’ wonders, this is it – mishaps and all. Can’t wait to go back.
