About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to Skeabost Bridge on the Isle of Skye – it was one of those journeys that starts off promising but quickly turns into a comedy of errors. We’d left the mainland ferry at Armadale full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav chirping away confidently. But Skye had other ideas. About halfway up, the road narrowed to a single track, and wouldn’t you know it, we met a sheep farmer herding his flock the other way. Cue a 20-minute standoff, me reversing into a passing place while he waved his crook like a conductor, and my other half muttering about “why didn’t we just take the bridge from Kyle?” By the time we rolled into Skeabost Bridge, we were frazzled, the car boot spilling picnic gear, and I’d somehow managed to spill coffee down my jumper. Arrival anticipation? More like arrival desperation.

Still, as we pulled up to the cottage, that first glimpse hit me like a breath of fresh Highland air. Nestled right in the heart of it all, just a stone’s throw from the River Snizort, it looked every bit the perfect bolt-hole for us two and our little one. We tumbled out, kids in tow (well, our imaginary dog, but you get the picture), and the chaos melted away. Stepping inside, the sitting room wrapped us up like a warm hug – cosy armchairs begging us to flop down after the road madness. It was all soft lighting and that lived-in feel you crave on holiday, not some sterile hotel vibe.

Wandering through, the kitchen/diner sealed the deal. Oven gleaming, hob ready for action, microwave, fridge, freezer – everything you need for rustling up a quick pasta or frying up local tatties without faffing about. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins (Tizer for the kiddo), and just sat there, grinning like idiots. The views out the window? Sweeping across those classic Skye landscapes – misty hills rolling down to the water, the kind that make you forget the sheep standoff ever happened.

That first evening, we didn’t venture far. A gentle stroll along the river path, maybe half a mile down, spotting herons and listening to the water gurgle. Back for a simple supper, planning tomorrow over tea. It got me reflecting a bit – I’m usually the one charging about, ticking off lists, but here, amid the arrival kerfuffle, I realised slowing down is the real luxury. No grand adventures yet, just this snug spot feeling like home already.

Next morning, we were off to nearby spots – a wander around the bridge area, dipping toes in the snaking river, breathing in that peaty air. The cottage made it effortless; no fancy faff, just proper self-catering bliss. If you’re after a base to soak up Skye’s rugged charm without the hassle, this is it. Our messy start? Best mishap ever – made the first impressions all the sweeter. Can’t wait to go back.
