About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Isle of Skye – that twisty single-track road from the bridge had me white-knuckling the steering wheel more than I’d care to admit. We’d set off from the mainland full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav promising a scenic three hours. But then, midway through, the heavens opened and we hit a flock of sheep that decided our hire car was their personal catwalk. A gentle nudge from the shepherd later, and we were back on track, laughing about it over soggy crisps. By the time we rolled into the sleepy township of Ose on Skye’s west coast, between Dunvegan and Struan, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine cosy evenings and zero emails.

Pulling up to the cottage, my first impressions were spot on: it’s this charming little haven tucked away, with a track from the gate straight down to the shore. Seals were already bobbing about like they owned the place, and we caught a glimpse of a sea eagle wheeling overhead. Proper magic. It’s the sort of spot that screams relaxed getaway for us – a couple in our forties, trading city chaos for cottage simplicity. No grand plans, just us, the wildlife, and whatever the tide brought in.

First morning, we wandered down that shore path, binoculars in hand, spotting otters playing in the kelp. I nearly tripped over a rock gawping at one – classic me, always more excited than coordinated. Lunch was a messy affair back at the cottage: I tried my hand at a Skye seafood chowder with fresh crab from a local supplier, but let’s just say the blender rebelled and we ended up with more of a soup-splatter situation. Hilarious chaos, wiped clean with a cuppa and a chuckle. That’s cottage life for you – nothing fancy, everything real.

A quick seven-mile hop to Dunvegan sorted us out with essentials. Skye’s oldest bakery there did these incredible scones, still warm, which we demolished with clotted cream while browsing the independent shops and that cracking art gallery. We saved the big treat for Dunvegan Castle and Gardens – wandering the grounds, seals barking from the loch below, felt like stepping into a storybook. No rush, just hand-in-hand strolls and the odd daft photo of me pretending to be a highlander.

Evenings were pure bliss: fire crackling, a dram of local whisky, watching the sun dip behind the hills. One night, gazing at the stars – clearer than I’ve ever seen – I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s non-stop, isn’t it? Work, worries, the lot. Here, it all melted away. We’re just two souls reconnecting over simple stuff – a shared laugh at my cooking fails, the thrill of a wildlife sighting, the comfort of doing sod all.

A detour to Claigan’s Coral Beach, just five miles north of Dunvegan, capped it off. That white shell sand against the turquoise water? Unreal. We paddled, skimmed stones, and headed back knackered but grinning. No need for Portree’s bustle this trip – Ose gave us everything. If you’re after a chilled couple’s break, this is it. Chaos, seals, and soul-recharging simplicity. We’re already plotting a return.
