About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to Skye – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past the bridge, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a single-track road that ended in a sheep blockade. There we were, honking gently while a flock of woolly rebels stared us down, until their shepherd appeared out of nowhere, grinning like he’d won the lottery. “First time on the island, eh?” he chuckled, waving us through with a crook that looked older than the Cuillins. That little mishap melted away the moment we crested the hill and spotted our two-storey cottage nestled on the Trotternish Peninsula – cosy, welcoming, with those first impressions hitting like a warm dram on a dreich day. I could already picture lazy evenings by the fire, anticipation buzzing as we unloaded the car.

Portree’s just a short hop away, 6.5 miles of twisting roads that hug the coast, and it wasn’t long before we wandered into its colourful harbour for a bite. That’s where we met Moira, the no-nonsense fishmonger with a laugh like a foghorn. “You lot from down south?” she asked, plonking a glistening mackerel on the scales. I confessed we were, and she launched into tales of the time a pod of dolphins photobombed her nephew’s fishing trip – “Cheeky buggers, stealing the show!” We chatted about her grandkids terrorising the seals at Uig’s ferry port, only 8 miles up the road, and before we knew it, she’d slipped us a recipe for Skye-style fish pie that became our holiday staple. Proper character, Moira was – the kind who makes you feel like you’ve known her forever.

The next day, we ambled to Staffin Beach, dinosaur footprints and all, and bumped into Tam, the local fossil fanatic walking his border collie. “Seen the beasts’ toes yet?” he winked, pointing out prints that looked suspiciously like my own wellies in the mud. Over thermos tea on the sand, he regaled us with stories of Trotternish folklore – fairy flags and quarrelsome giants – his eyes twinkling as he swore he’d once spotted the Old Man of Storr winking back during a hike 15 miles off. We laughed till our sides ached, especially when he admitted to “borrowing” a puffin feather from a boat trip out of Uig. “Don’t tell the warden,” he stage-whispered.

Even at Dunvegan Castle and Gardens, 21 miles round the scenic route, it was the people who stole the show. Old Angus, the gardener with a beard like he’d invented lichen, cornered us by the fairy glen. “You walking the peninsula trails?” he asked, clipping hedges with surgical precision. Turned out he’d lived here 50 years, knew every quirky corner, and shared whispers of sea eagles swooping low enough to nick your sandwiches on those wildlife excursions. His gentle ribbing about us “soft southerners” had me reflecting on how we rush about back home – up here, time stretches like the horizons, and chats like his remind you to breathe.

Those locals, with their dry wit and endless yarns, turned our cottage stay into something magical. No grand adventures needed when every conversation feels like uncovering a hidden bothy gem. If you’re after peace on Skye, pack your curiosity – the real Trotternish treasures are the folk you’ll meet.
