About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Isle of Skye – that winding single-track road from the mainland, with sheep popping out like they owned the place. We’d splashed out on a spontaneous break, just me and my wife, craving some proper downtime away from the daily grind. But halfway across the bridge, disaster struck: a flat tyre. There we were, stranded in the drizzle, me faffing about with the spare while she rang the breakdown service, laughing that it was typical us – always turning a simple journey into an episode of some daft road trip show. An hour later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit, but buzzing with that “we’ve made it” anticipation.

Pulling up to this charming detached cottage, halfway between Portree and Dunvegan on the edge of a crofting community, we were gobsmacked. Just a few minutes’ walk from the sea shore, it’s the perfect wee base for pottering about. Built over a century ago, it’s got that cosy, lived-in feel – two doubles, a twin, and a single, enough for seven if you’re travelling with the clan, but spot-on for us lovebirds wanting space to breathe. Upstairs, the views hit you like a tonic: on a clear day, you can spy the outer isles stretching out forever. First impressions? Pure magic. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of Skye gin, and just soaked it in from the window seat.

The days blurred into this blissful rhythm of cottage life – the good, the chaotic, and the downright hilarious. Mornings started with brekkie chaos: I’d burn the toast trying to master the ancient toaster, while she whipped up porridge with local honey from the nearby farm shop. Then we’d wander down to the shore, boots squelching in the peaty mud, spotting seals bobbing about like nosy neighbours. One afternoon, we hiked the short path to the Coral Beach – that quirky stretch of crushed coral near Dunvegan, shimmering white against the turquoise water. We paddled barefoot, giggling as the cold bit our toes, me pretending I was some hardy Highlander while shivering like a leaf.

Evenings were for simple pleasures: firing up the AGA for a roast (lamb from the croft, naturally), then curling up with board games by the wood burner. Chaos ensued one night when a rogue mouse decided our cheese platter was his – we chased it round the kitchen in hysterics, me wielding a tea towel like a lasso. Reflecting on it now, sat here back home, I realise that’s the real joy of these spots: they strip you back to basics. No screens, no schedules – just us, a bit of island mayhem, and those views reminding you life’s too short for anything but the good stuff. Skye worked its spell; we left lighter, closer, already plotting the next escape. If you’re after that relaxed family-couple vibe, this is your spot.
