About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Isle of Skye – that hairpin road from the mainland had me gripping the wheel like my life depended on it, which it probably did after I misjudged a corner and ended up with the wing mirror kissing a passing sheep. “Och, it’s away wi’ ye!” the farmer yelled as I sheepishly reversed, his grin wider than the Cuillins. Little did I know, that was the perfect opener to a holiday packed with characters who’d make you laugh till your sides ached.

Pulling up to the cottage, heart racing with that buzz of finally arriving somewhere special, I was gobsmacked. Perched high with this jaw-dropping view over Loch Eyre, it’s the sort of place that makes you exhale and think, right, this is it. A proper high-quality holiday let, spacious inside with those bright, homely colours that make it feel like your own for the week. We slipped in through the back entrance straight into the utility room – washing machine and tumble dryer primed for the muddy walks ahead. First impressions? Pure magic, especially after the sheep drama.

No sooner had we unpacked than we wandered down to the nearby bay, and that’s where the real Skye magic kicked in: the locals. There was wee Hamish, the fisherman with a beard like a bird’s nest, casting lines off the rocks. “Lass,” he called to my mate Sarah, “ye’ve got the luck o’ the selkies today – pull in a monster!” Turned out he was spot on; she hooked a mackerel the size of her arm, and Hamish spent the next hour regaling us with tales of storms that “swallowed boats whole” and the time he outran a pod of dolphins on his wee dinghy. His eyes twinkled like the loch at sunset – pure storyteller, that one.

Next day, hiking along the cliffs within spitting distance of the cottage, we bumped into Morag at her croft gate, up to her elbows in flour. “Come in, come in, ye look half-starved!” she insisted, thrusting scones hotter than the gossip. Over tea, she spilled on village feuds – “Old Jock next door swears his cat talks to the fairies, and I’m not one to argue after what I’ve seen.” We were in stitches, her dry wit cutting sharper than any midgie bite. It got me reflecting, you know? In the rush of London life, I’d forgotten how a good natter with strangers can recharge your soul more than any fancy spa.

Evenings back at the cottage, we’d pore over maps by the window, vistas stretching out forever, but it was the pub chats that stole the show. Big Tam, the barman at the local inn just a stroll away, poured our pints with yarns about Skye’s “ghostly pipes” echoing on misty nights. “Ye hear ’em yet?” he winked. Cheeky sod – had us jumping at every gust.

Those quirky souls turned a cracking holiday let into something unforgettable. If you’re after proper Highland craic, this is your spot. Made me promise myself to return, sheep mishaps and all.
