About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Isle of Skye – that winding single-track road from the mainland, with sheep scattering like they owned the place. We’d set off from Inverness full of beans, playlist blasting some cracking folk tunes, but about halfway, disaster struck: a flat tyre right in the middle of nowhere, rain lashing down like it had a personal grudge. Me, faffing about with the spare in my wellies, swearing under my breath (quietly, mind), while my other half rang the breakdown service. An hour later, we were back on track, but it had us laughing about our city slicker ways. Still, as Uig came into view, those dramatic hillsides unfolding around us, my heart lifted. I could already feel the pull to just... stop.

Pulling into the little village of Kingsburgh, near Uig and just a short hop from Portree, the cottage appeared like a hug from the landscape itself. It’s the sort of place perfect for families or a couple of pairs of mates – cosy, unpretentious, nestled right in the thick of those vast, rugged views. First impressions? Magic. The garden stretched out lazily towards the hills, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and I was grinning like an idiot before we’d even unpacked.

What sold it for us wasn’t the grand adventures – though Skye’s got walks and beaches aplenty on the doorstep – but the sheer joy of doing bugger all. We’d flop into the garden chairs first thing, mugs of tea steaming, watching mist roll off the hills like a slow-motion special effect. No rush, no plans. I’d crack open a book – some dog-eared thriller I’d been meaning to read for months – and lose hours while the world ticked by at snail pace. Lunch was whatever we rustled up from the local shop in Uig: crusty bread, cheese, and a flask of soup, eaten on a rug amid the heather. Bliss.

One afternoon, I caught myself just staring at a sheep on the hillside opposite, pondering if it was having a better holiday than me. Gentle self-reflection moment: back home, I’m always chasing the next deadline, phone glued to my hand. Here? Time stretched out. We’d potter in the garden, picking berries if they were ripe, or nap under the big sky. Evenings meant lighting the fire (no faffing required), a glass of wine, and more reading by the window, hills turning golden then purple. My other half sketched a bit, I dozed – pure contentment.

Sure, we wandered a nearby beach one morning, toes in the cool sand, but mostly it was this: slowing right down. No Instagram poses, just breathing it all in. Leaving felt like waking from a dream – that flat tyre a distant joke now. If you fancy recharging your batteries amid Skye’s wonders, find yourself a spot like this. You won’t want to leave.
