About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in the Highlands and Islands – it was one of those classic Scottish road trips that starts with high hopes and ends in a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car back in Inverness, me navigating with a dodgy signal on my phone, my mate Dave at the wheel, and the boot stuffed with enough crisps and wine to see us through a siege. The single-track roads wound through misty glens, past shaggy Highland cows eyeing us suspiciously, and I was buzzing with anticipation, picturing cosy evenings by a fire with epic views. Then came the mishap: a sudden downpour turned the road into a slick ribbon, and Dave – bless him, he’s more townie than hillwalker – misjudged a passing place. We scraped the wing mirror on a stone wall with a nasty crunch. Hearts in mouths, we pulled over, laughing nervously as rain hammered the roof. “Well, that’s one way to arrive with a story,” I said, duct-taping it back on while trying not to think about the hire car deposit.

By the time we trundled up the final hill, soaked and slightly frazzled, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. There it was, this cracking single-storey cottage nestled among rolling hills, just a short stroll from a tiny village – isolated enough for proper peace, but with a pub only five minutes’ drive away, thank goodness. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and stepped inside to this stylish sitting room that screamed comfort. Plonking onto the leather sofas with their cosy throws, we lit the open fire (matches at the ready, no faffing about), and it was instant bliss. The lighting was perfect – dimmers and lamps casting a soft glow – and we cracked open a bottle while flipping through the stack of DVDs. I could’ve stayed there all week, but the panoramic windows teased us with glimpses of the landscape, promising sunsets that’d knock your socks off.

That first evening, after rustling up spag bol in the open-plan kitchen (fully kitted out, even a washer/dryer so we didn’t stink of wet dog), we headed out to the private decking. The sun dipped low, painting the hills gold, and there were the stars popping out one by one – proper dark skies, no light pollution, just pure magic. Wildlife was everywhere too: a roe deer skipped past at dusk, and we spotted owls hooting later. Borrowed the owners’ hot tub with plastic glasses in hand – pure luxury, bubbling away as we watched the sunrise the next morning, steam rising like we were in our own private spa.

Wandering the nearby paths was a dream – gentle hikes with views that stretched forever, heather underfoot and fresh air that cleared the city cobwebs. One afternoon, I nipped into that secret snug (tucked behind a mirror, dead clever) with a book and a cuppa, curling up on the day bed. It got me reflecting a bit – life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and noise, but here, amid the quiet, I realised how much I need these escapes to recharge. Dave took the mick, calling me “poet of the hills,” but even he admitted it was spot on. Pub run for a pint of local ale sealed the deal – proper Highland hospitality without the trek.

Honestly, from that chaotic arrival to the serene sunrises, it was the perfect reset. If you’re after peace, wildlife, walks, and those jaw-dropping vistas with a splash of luxury, this is your spot. We left buzzing to return, wing mirror mishap and all.
