About Highlands And Islands
I’ll never forget the drive up to Skye – that winding single-track road from the bridge, with sheep eyeing you like they own the place. We’d set off from the mainland full of beans, sandwiches packed and playlists sorted, but about halfway, the heavens opened. Proper biblical stuff. Our little hire car aquaplaned on a puddle the size of Loch Ness, and I ended up swearing at the windscreen wipers like they’d personally offended me. A quick pull-over, hearts racing, and we laughed it off with a soggy flask of tea. Still, as we crested the hill into Kensaleyre, seven miles from Portree, the clouds parted just enough to tease what was ahead. My mate Dave and I were buzzing – this was our first lads’ trip in ages, and the anticipation had us grinning like kids.

Pulling up to the cottage, we were gobsmacked. This stunning detached place sits in the friendliest crofting township, commanding these fabulous sea and mountain views that hit you right in the chest. Luxuriously kitted out on one level, it’s perfect for a group – three spacious bedrooms (one with en-suite), a massive open-plan living area blending kitchen, breakfast bar, and dining space with French doors to a patio. Two sitting areas sealed the deal: one with a woodburning stove for cosy nights, the other with leather recliners begging you to gawp at the scenery. First impressions? Pure magic. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and just soaked it in.

Next morning, weather gods smiling, we laced up for the Sligachan trails – those classic Skye hikes with rivers roaring and Cuillin peaks looming. A good five-miler along the river path, lungs burning in the crisp air, stopping for photos where the water crashes like it’s auditioning for a waterfall documentary. Lunch on a rock, tattie scones from our stash, feeling like proper explorers. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Afternoon turned squally, mist rolling in thick as pea soup. Plans for the Fairy Pools? Scrubbed. Instead, we pivoted to a shorter loop near the cottage, trudging through heather in full waterproofs, wind whipping our faces. Dave slipped in mud up to his knees – “I’m a human bog brush!” he yelped – and we howled laughing, linking arms like daft schoolboys.

Day two, blue skies again, so we tackled the coastal path towards Staffin, keeping it local with those epic sea views and basalt cliffs. Muddy patches from overnight rain added spice, but the payoff was stumbling on a hidden beach, seals barking offshore. Then, bam – hailstones the size of marbles. We sheltered under an overhang, brewing tea on the go, plotting our escape. Back at base, stove roaring, we thawed out with whisky and tall tales. That evening in the recliners, views turning golden, I had a quiet moment. Staring out, rain pattering the windows, I thought: when did life get so busy we forget these simple highs? A soggy hike beats a desk any day.

By trip’s end, we’d notched up rainy slogs, sunny strides, and a few blisters, all shaped by Skye’s fickle skies. That cottage was our perfect hub – views fuelling the soul, comfort mending the aches. If you’re chasing Highland adventures, this is the spot. Just pack extra socks.
