About Inverness
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday spot near Inverness – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, board games, and enough snacks to see us through a Highland siege. My partner and I, plus our two nippers, were buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement, windows down, singing along to some dodgy playlist. Then, about 20 minutes from our turning, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with our estate car right in the middle of a narrow single-track road. Heart in mouth, I slammed on the brakes, and we all jolted forward like human pinballs. No harm done, but it set the tone for the kind of chaotic charm you only get on these Scottish jaunts. Laughing it off, we finally arrived at the semi-detached cottage, and blimey, the first impressions were spot on – that fabulous decking area stretching out to an enclosed garden with panoramic views over Glen Strathfarrar. We couldn’t wait to crack open a bottle of fizz and soak it all in.

Stepping through the door felt like the reading break we’d been craving had officially begun. The contemporary open-plan living area welcomed us with those comfy sofas begging for a collapse, a smart TV for rainy-day movies, and a dining-kitchen setup that screamed “whip up a feast without the faff”. It was perfect for us as a family – cosy bedrooms upstairs that the kids claimed in seconds, all ready for lazy lie-ins. We opted for the wood-fired hot tub add-on, and that first evening, as the sun dipped behind the glen, we fired it up. Bubbling away under the stars, with steam rising and the kids giggling about who could make the biggest splash, it was pure bliss. Simple pleasures like that – no itinerary, just us unwinding.

The next few days blurred into that glorious cottage life rhythm. Mornings started with brekkie on the decking, watching mist roll off the hills while porridge bubbled on the hob. We kept things local, pottering down to the nearby River Beauly for a bit of stone-skipping and pebble-hunting – the kids turned it into an Olympic event, naturally, with me as the dodgy judge. Afternoons meant gentle walks along the glen paths, spotting red deer and picking brambles for impromptu crumble. One hilarious mishap had us all slipping on mud like Bambi on ice during a sudden shower – cue soggy trousers and non-stop laughter back at the cottage, drying off with mugs of tea and a cheeky biscuit raid.

Evenings were for hot tub dips and storytelling, the kind where you embellish sheep encounters into epic tales. There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one night, feet dangling in the warm water, kids finally knackered and tucked up. I caught my partner’s eye and thought, “This is it, isn’t it? The quiet magic of ditching the daily grind for decking views and family daftness.” No grand adventures, just recharging amid the Highland hush. We left feeling utterly refreshed, already plotting a return. If you’re after a relaxed couple or family escape, this spot’s a gem – chaos, cosiness, and all.
