About Isle Of Skye
The drive up to the Isle of Skye was meant to be one of those scenic epics you brag about on Instagram, but let's just say mine kicked off with a proper comedy of errors. I'd left Inverness full of beans, playlist blasting some indie folk tunes, only for the sat-nav to lose its marbles halfway across the bridge. Cue me pulling over in a layby near Broadford, frantically waving at my phone signal like it was a misbehaving puppy, while a queue of patient locals honked politely behind. By the time I finally deciphered the back roads to Elgol, the heavens had opened, and I was navigating single-track lanes with wipers on full pelt, heart in my mouth every time a sheep ambled into view. One particularly stubborn ewe forced me into a five-point turn that nearly ended with me in a ditch – talk about a warm welcome from Skye!

But oh, pulling up to the cottage in Elgol? That made every hairpin bend and woolly roadblock worth it. Tucked in this fabulously elevated spot on the southeast edge, the place hit me like a breath of fresh, salty air. It's a stunning detached cottage, all bright and contemporary inside, with those massive windows framing views straight out over the sea to the Inner Hebrides. I stepped out of the car soaked to the skin, grinning like an idiot as the rain eased just enough to reveal the drama unfolding below – Cuillin peaks shrouded in mist, waves crashing against the shore. First impressions? Pure magic. No chain hotel blandness here; this was proper home-from-home vibes, perfect for me and my mates who'd piled in later.

We tumbled inside, dripping puddles everywhere, and it was love at first sight. Downstairs, two spacious bedrooms with en-suites – one even had a walk-in wardrobe that made me feel briefly fancy – meant no squabbles over bathrooms. Upstairs opened into this airy living space where you could flop on the sofa and watch seals bob about in the bay. We cracked open a bottle of Skye gin (local tipple, naturally), rustled up fish and chips from the nearby van in Elgol, and just soaked it in. The anticipation on that chaotic drive had built to fever pitch, and it delivered tenfold.

Wandering down to the pebbly beach the next morning – all of five minutes' stroll – we spotted dolphins arcing through the water, and I couldn't help but chuckle at myself. Here I was, city lad turned accidental adventurer, reflecting on how a soggy arrival had stripped away the stress of everyday nonsense. No deadlines, no emails, just us lot laughing about that daft sheep and plotting a boat trip to Loch Coruisk. Staying put in Elgol felt like the smartest move; why venture far when paradise is right on your doorstep? If you're after a holiday that resets your soul with a side of mischief, this corner of Skye is it. Can't wait to go back.
