About Isle Of Skye
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Isle of Skye – that winding single-track road from the mainland, with Cuillin views peeking through the mist like a half-hearted postcard. We’d piled into the car in Inverness, full of sandwiches and daft excitement, only for me to take a wrong turn just past Broadford and end up reversing down a sheep-dotted lane with a farmer giving me the side-eye. Classic me, always the navigator who thinks “it’ll be fine.” But honestly, that little mishap just amped up the anticipation – by the time we trundled into Portree, hearts were thumping with that proper holiday buzz.

Pulling up to our semi-detached, single-storey spot felt like stumbling into a hug. Tucked just a short hop from the town’s bustle – pubs, shops, the lot – it was perfect for us lot, a family of six itching to unpack and unwind. Inside, the kitchen was a dream for knocking up simple suppers, all mod cons and no faff, flowing into a dining nook made for lingering over plates of tatties and haggis. Post-dinner, we’d shove everything in the dishwasher and flop into the lounge, toes curling by the woodburning stove as rain pattered outside. First impressions? Spot on. It screamed “cosy basecamp for doing bugger all,” and boy, did we lean into that.

Skye’s got its epic hikes and fairy pools, sure, but this trip was all about slamming the brakes on life’s rush. Lazy cottage days became our religion. Mornings started slow – I’d brew tea in that humming kitchen, then we’d spill into the garden with books and flasks. The patch was a riot of wildflowers and tattie patches, with benches begging you to park your bum and stare at the harbour glint. I’d crack open a battered paperback – some tartan-tinged mystery – while the kids sketched puffins or chased each other in circles, their giggles bouncing off the hedges. Lunch? A picnic of cheese toasties right there, crumbs and all, no rush to clear up.

Afternoons blurred into stove-lit hazes. We’d hunker down with board games or just natter, the world shrinking to that lounge glow. One evening, as peat smoke curled up, I caught myself staring into the flames, mug warming my hands, and had a proper moment. Work emails? Miles away. Deadlines? Forgotten. Here I was, mid-forties and finally getting why folk bang on about slowing down – it’s not lazy, it’s lush. A gentle nudge from the island air, reminding you life’s too short for constant go-go-go.

Evenings wandered into Portree’s easy charm – a fish supper from the chippy, maybe a pint at the Isles Inn, but always back to base before dark. The garden called again at dusk, stars popping like forgotten fireworks. No grand adventures, just pure, unfiltered joy in the small stuff: a shared laugh over burnt scones, the stove’s crackle scoring our silence. Skye worked its magic not with drama, but with this quiet permission to breathe. We left fatter in the soul, already plotting a return to do even less. What a week.
