About Isle Of Skye
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Isle of Skye – that winding single-track road from the bridge, with sheep eyeing you suspiciously from the verges like they owned the place. We’d set off from Inverness full of beans, playlist blasting some indie folk tunes, but about halfway, disaster struck: a flat tyre. Right there in the middle of nowhere, rain spitting down, and me faffing about with the jack like I was in a Carry On film. Took us an hour to sort, but honestly, it just added to the adventure. By the time we rolled into Elgol, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, that fizzy feeling of “what’s around the corner?”

Pulling up to our single-storey retreat in this postcard-pretty village, my jaw dropped. Tucked away with these jaw-dropping views straight out to sea, it was moments from the beach and a couple of handy local spots for milk or a pint. Ground-floor bliss, perfect for us lot – no stairs to lug cases up, just pure, welcoming cosiness. Stepping inside felt like sinking into a warm hug; we dumped the bags and cracked open a window to let the salty breeze wander in.

The joy of it all? Doing sod all, really. That first morning, I woke to the sound of waves whispering and gulls having a right old chinwag outside. No alarm, no rush – just pottering out to the garden with a cuppa. It’s a cracking little spot, that garden: wildflowers nodding in the wind, a bench begging you to flop down and stare at the horizon. I spent hours there, feet up, nose in a battered paperback – some daft crime novel I’d been saving. The other half dozed in a hammock (didn’t know we had one till we found it), and we’d only stir for lazy lunches of cheese toasties and whatever was in the fridge.

Afternoons blurred into this glorious nothing. A gentle amble down to the beach, maybe 10 minutes’ pootle, toes in the cool pebbles, eyes on the Cuillins brooding in the distance. Back for more reading, sprawled on the sofa with the window flung wide, watching clouds chase each other across the sky. One evening, we lit the barbecue – nothing fancy, just sausages and a bottle of red – and sat in the garden till the stars popped out, proper pinpricks in the velvet dark. No grand hikes or ticking off viewpoints; just breathing it all in, slow as you like.

It got me thinking, midweek, glass in hand, gazing at the sea: when did we all get so frantic? Back home, it’s emails and deadlines, but here? Time stretched out lazy-like, and I realised slowing down is the real luxury. No FOMO, no scroll; just us, the views, and that deep, bone-settling peace. If you’re after recharging proper, this is the ticket – a wee haven where doing very little feels like the point of it all. Can’t wait to go back.
