About Loch Lomond
Pulling up to this cracking three-bed hot tub cottage, pet-friendly and all, my first impressions were spot on. Tucked away in Cairndow, it had that perfect rustic charm without being over-the-top, with a lush garden rolling down towards the water's edge. The dogs went mental with excitement, sniffing every blade of grass, and I couldn't stop grinning at the view – glassy Loch Fyne stretching out, hills cradling it all like a postcard. But honestly, the joy of the whole trip was doing sod all. After that tyre palaver, I was ready to switch off completely. Mornings started lazy: I'd potter out to the garden with a steaming mug of tea, feet up on a lounger, watching mist lift off the loch. No rush, no plans – just me, a dog sprawled nearby, and whatever book I'd grabbed (a battered copy of Highland folklore this time). The garden was an absolute dream for it – wildflowers buzzing with bees, a hammock swaying gently, and that hot tub bubbling away for later. Afternoons blurred into reading marathons under a brolly when the Scottish weather threw a light shower, or just staring at the water, letting my mind wander. One day, I managed a gentle amble along the shore path, no more than a mile, picking up smooth pebbles and chucking them for the dogs, but mostly it was about sinking into that sofa with crisps and a podcast, the kind of sloth-like bliss you forget you need. There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one evening, bubbling in the hot tub as the sun set in a blaze of pink over the water. Sat there, glass of local gin in hand, I realised how knackered I'd been from city life – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here, time stretched out; no one chasing you, just the lap of waves and a heron's call. It hit me: sometimes the best holiday isn't ticking off hikes or castles, but reclaiming that lost art of proper loafing. We did pop to the Cairndow pier for fish and chips once, devoured on a bench with salty chips and vinegar zings, but even that felt like an event amid the nothing-much. By the time we packed up, I was recharged, promising myself more of these slow-down escapes. Loch Lomond's magic isn't in the big adventures – it's in these quiet cottage days that stick with you longest. Can't wait to go back. |
