About Loch Lomond
Arrochar’s a gem of a spot, right on the doorstep of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, but honestly, we barely strayed far. The real joy was the village itself – friendly inns, a cracking general store, and those little craft shops that tempted you in for a browse. But let’s be real, the star of the show was the food. After unpacking, we wandered down to the Arrochar Hotel for a proper welcome pint and some fish and chips. Crispy batter, fat chips, mushy peas – it hit the spot after that soggy drive. The locals were dead chatty too, sharing tips on the best hikes (which we saved for another day, stomachs first). Next morning, I fancied playing house chef. Nipped to the general store for local treats: fresh eggs from nearby farms, smoked Argyll kippers, and a loaf of crusty bread that smelled like heaven. Back at the property, with those loch views as my backdrop, I attempted a full Scottish breakfast. Sausages sizzling, black pudding on the go – but crikey, I overdid the tattie scones. They came out more like hockey pucks. We laughed it off with mugs of strong tea, picking at the kipper instead. Lesson learned: stick to the pros sometimes. Self-reflection moment: I’m all enthusiasm in the kitchen, zero finesse. Still, eating with that vista? Worth every burnt edge. Lunch was a picnic affair – grabbed cheeses, oatcakes, and venison salami from the store, plus some craft gin from a wee shop. Spread it out on the deck, watching boats bob on Loch Long. Evenings, we hit the Village Inn for hearty bowls of Cullen skink (creamy smoked haddock soup, pure comfort) and sticky toffee pudding that could convert a diet fiend. One night, we splashed out on their venison stew – tender, rich, with local veg that tasted of the hills. Pub grub here isn’t fancy, but it’s spot-on, with real ales pulled by folks who know their stuff. Loch Lomond’s just two miles off, so we did pop over for a cruise one arvo – sealed the deal with onboard scones and clotted cream, devoured while gazing at those bonnie banks. Back in Arrochar, a final supper of haggis, neeps and tatties from the hotel rounded it off. No grand adventures needed; this stay was all about savouring the local grub, the warm welcomes, and those epic views. If you’re after a holiday where good food and good company fill your days, Arrochar’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return – next time, I’ll master those scones. |
