About Loch Lomond
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot near Loch Lomond – it was one of those classic Scottish road trips that starts with high hopes and ends in a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car from Glasgow, me navigating with my trusty phone, the kids bickering in the back over crisps, and my other half at the wheel, humming along to some dodgy 90s playlist. About halfway, just past Drymen, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. “Recalculating,” it chirped cheerfully as we veered onto a single-track lane that seemed to lead straight into a sheep’s front garden. Cue frantic reversing past a flock that eyed us like we were invading aliens, and a minor row about whether I’d entered the postcode right (I had, honest). By the time we spotted the turn-off for Tarbet, we were all a bit frazzled, but the anticipation was buzzing – Loch Lomond holidays are pure magic, aren’t they?

Pulling up to the property felt like stumbling into a dream after that chaos. It’s this gorgeous, recently renovated contemporary home that sleeps up to 10, perfect for our big family gathering. From the moment we tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, we were smitten. The secure, private walled garden stretches a full acre, bursting with beautifully planted flowers and shrubs that made me wish I had a green thumb instead of my usual talent for killing houseplants. We dumped the luggage and just wandered, breathing in that crisp Highland air, the kids already racing about like they’d been let loose in Narnia.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant – sorry, I mean, absolutely spot on. The place had this warm, welcoming vibe, all open spaces and cosy corners that screamed “relax here”. We headed straight out the back, through the adjoining hillside woodlands – proper fairy-tale stuff with dappled light and birdsong – and down to the private beach on the loch. The water was glassy calm, lapping at the pebbles, and we couldn’t resist a paddle. The little ones splashed about, shrieking with glee, while I dipped a toe in and pretended I wasn’t freezing. It was one of those moments that hits you: why don’t we do this more often? Life back home is such a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines; here, time just slowed down.

Next morning, we shook off the travel cobwebs and drove the mile to Tarbet for a cruise. Gliding out onto the loch, past those tiny islands with their seals and swooping gulls, the scenery was breathtaking – misty hills folding into the water like a watercolour painting. Later, we pottered over to Luss, just seven miles away, where the streets are lined with those charming 18th and 19th-century cottages built for slate quarry workers. It’s all so well-preserved, with vibrant floral displays spilling over every wall. We grabbed cream teas in a wee café, wandered hand-in-hand, and I had a quiet chuckle at myself – me, the city slicker, feeling all poetic about a village stroll.

That arrival mishap? It was the perfect icebreaker, turning potential grumps into giggles. Staying here reminded me holidays aren’t about flawless plans; they’re about those shared, daft moments that stick. If you’re after a Loch Lomond gem for family or mates, this is it – we’re already plotting a return.
