About Loch Lomond
I’ll never forget the drive up to Loch Lomond – a proper Scottish adventure from the off. We’d piled the car with kids, wellies, and enough snacks to feed a Highland regiment, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Stirling. It rerouted us down some winding single-track lane that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline, with sheep eyeing us suspiciously from the verges. “Are we lost, Dad?” piped up little Jamie from the back, mid-crisps. Turns out, it shaved ten minutes off, but my heart rate didn’t catch up till we crested the hill and there it was: Loch Lomond sparkling under a patchy blue sky. Anticipation bubbled up – this was going to be magic.

Pulling into the spot in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, we were gobsmacked by the first impressions. Right from the door, walks and cycle rides unfurled into the hills, and this luxury timber-built ground floor apartment felt like it’d been waiting just for us. Cosy yet swish, with big windows framing the water and woods – perfect for a family unwind. We dumped the bags and cracked open a flask of tea on the deck, watching a heron stalk the shallows. Bliss.

The days blurred into that sweet cottage life chaos we crave on holiday. Mornings kicked off with porridge splattered across the kitchen (cheers, toddlers), then we’d lace up for gentle ambles along the lochside paths. One jaunt took us to the end of the bay, where the kids skimmed stones and I pretended I wasn’t knackered keeping up. Laughter echoed as we dodged puddles – nothing beats that fresh, piney air filling your lungs. Afternoons? Bike hire from the nearby spot, pedalling easy trails through oakwoods, stopping for picnics of sausage rolls and flask coffee. The other half and I snuck a quiet row on the loch in a rented boat, waving at seals while the little ones built pebble castles on the beach.

Evenings were pure simple pleasures: firing up the barbecue (weather permitting – we had one drizzly dash indoors), then huddling for board games as rain pattered the roof. One night, we spotted otters playing just offshore – a proper “shush, look!” moment that had us all grinning like loons. There was the usual family mayhem, mind – a lost welly in the undergrowth sparking a treasure hunt, and me burning the toast because I got distracted by the view. Light-hearted stuff that makes it real.

Sitting there on the last morning, mug in hand, I had a wee moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, amid the gentle chaos of muddy boots and shared giggles, everything slowed. It reminded me why we do these breaks: not for Instagram perfection, but for those unhurried joys that recharge the soul. Loch Lomond delivered in spades – we’re already plotting a return. If you fancy ditching the grind for lochside hygge, this is your spot.
