About Loch Lomond
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday cottage near Loch Lomond – it was one of those trips that started with high hopes and a full boot of snacks, but quickly turned into a comedy of errors. We’d left Glasgow early, buzzing with anticipation about escaping the city for a proper Scottish break. The sat-nav promised a smooth hour-and-a-bit jaunt through Argyllshire’s winding roads, but oh no. First, we hit a massive queue on the A82 thanks to some cheeky sheep blocking the way – classic Scotland, innit? Then, as we turned off towards Garelochhead, I managed to spill my entire flask of tea all over the passenger footwell. Cue frantic mopping with Costa napkins while my other half yelled about soggy socks. By the time we pulled up at this charming, fully refurbished traditional cottage on the rural edges of the village, we were frazzled, laughing hysterically, and desperately needing a cuppa that wasn’t diluted with road rage.

Stepping out, though, all that arrival chaos melted away like mist off the loch. What a first impression! Perched right on the ground floor with four double bedrooms (two with en suites, plus a handy shower room), it’s the perfect setup for a family like ours – no creaky stairs to navigate after a long day out. Inside, it’s been restyled with a contemporary vibe that feels cosy rather than flashy: a well-equipped kitchen with a dining area where we cracked open a bottle of fizz straight away, and a relaxing sitting room that just invites you to flop down with a book. But the real showstopper? That front garden and patio with jaw-dropping views over the mountains beyond. We stood there gobsmacked, the tranquility hitting us like a warm hug. Garelochhead’s right there on the shore of Gare Loch, with its pubs and shops just a stroll away, and the West Highland Line chugging past at the local station – proper convenient without feeling touristy.

That first evening, we barely moved. Sat on the patio with mugs of proper builder’s tea (mine safely contained this time), watching the sun dip behind the hills, planning a gentle wander for the morrow. The anticipation on the drive had been all about Loch Lomond’s drama – it’s only a short hop away, along with Loch Long – but arriving here made me reflect a bit. I’m usually the one charging about, ticking off Munros like they’re errands, but this spot forced a pause. Maybe us city folk need that rural reset more than we admit; it’s humbling how a simple view can make you grateful for the quiet.

Next morning, we ambled down to the village for bacon rolls, then hit the trails around Garelochhead – superb walking straight from the door, with those hills calling us up close. A cheeky pint at the pub later, and we were already plotting a fishing trip on Loch Lomond (booked with the owner, as advised). Honestly, if your idea of a holiday is ditching the hassle for hills, lochs, and a cracking cottage base, this is it. We left with muddy boots and fuller hearts – can’t wait to go back.
