About Loch Lomond
Pulling up to the property, our jaws dropped. It’s this gorgeous 16th-century historic retreat, just 3.6 miles from Gare Loch, tucked into the stunning landscapes of Helensburgh and the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Blending old-world charm with all the mod cons you need, it felt like stepping into a hug from the past. We unloaded the bags, kicked off our shoes, and within minutes were sipping tea on the terrace, watching the water sparkle under the Scottish sun – first impressions? Pure magic. We’d booked it for a proper relaxed couple’s break, no kids or grand plans, just us soaking up the simple pleasures of cottage life. Mornings started slow: brewing coffee in the well-kitted kitchen, then wandering hand-in-hand down to the shore. Gare Loch’s pebbly beach is a five-minute stroll, perfect for skimmin’ stones and paddling in the shallows – I managed a spectacular belly-flop attempting a fancy throw, which had Sarah in stitches. “You’re 42, not 12!” she laughed, but that’s the joy of it, isn’t it? No pressure, just daft fun. Afternoons were for gentle rambles in the national park – nothing too strenuous, mind. We followed easy paths through ancient woods nearby, spotting herons and the odd red squirrel darting about. One day we packed a picnic and found a quiet spot by the loch, munching cheese rolls and crisps while the world slowed right down. Evenings brought that cosy chaos we love: firing up the oven for a roast (the Aga vibes were spot on), spilling wine while chopping veg, then curling up by the fire with a board game. Monopoly turned into a full-blown row over Boardwalk – typical us – but it ended in giggles and make-up cuddles. There was this quiet moment on the third night, staring out at the stars (no light pollution here!), when I caught myself reflecting. Work’s been mad lately, and we’ve let the little things slip. This place reminded me how easy it is to switch off, to just be us again – no screens, no schedules, just loch breezes and each other. We even snuck in a short boat trip from the local jetty, chugging along the calm waters, waving at seals like proper tourists. Packing up felt bittersweet, but we’re already plotting a return. If you fancy a chilled-out escape blending history, nature, and a dash of holiday mayhem, this corner of Loch Lomond delivers every time. Proper tonic for the soul. |
