About Loch Ness
Pulling up to our lower-ground apartment right in the heart of Inverness, my first impressions were spot on – it felt like stepping into a warm hug after the crisp chill outside. Just a handful of steps down to the patio doors, and we were in this brilliant open-plan space, all tiled floors and pillars giving it a snug, atmospheric vibe. Perfect for a couple of mates like us, with the bedroom plus a sofa bed for extra kip, and everything you’d need self-catering-wise: a sleek kitchen kitted out with a dishwasher and washer/dryer, so no faffing about with chores. That grand dining table became our command centre for plotting the days ahead, and the plush sofa with its big telly was pure bliss for evenings in. Autumn shaped every bit of it, didn’t it? The season’s golden light filtered through the windows as we rustled up breakfasts of porridge and fresh scones from the nearby bakery – those cooler mornings made everything taste better, steam rising like the Loch itself. We wandered out to the riverside paths along the Ness, the trees rustling in that fresh, bracing wind, leaves crunching underfoot. It was magical how the fading summer greenery mixed with the first hints of frost-kissed bracken, turning simple strolls into something proper poetic. One afternoon, we hired bikes and pedalled along the Caledonian Canal towpaths, the low sun glinting off the water, stopping for hot chocolate at a wee café where the barista joked about Nessie hiding in the autumn fog. No monster sightings, mind, but the dramatic landscapes felt alive with seasonal mystery – cooler temps meant fewer crowds, just us and the russet hills. Evenings were the best, unwinding with a dram or two at that table, toasting the day’s wilds. The shorter days wrapped everything in this cosy glow; we’d watch the light fade over the city from the patio, bundled in jumpers against the nip in the air. It got me reflecting a bit, actually – rushing about life back home, I forget how a change of season can reset you. Here, with the Highland Capital buzzing just footsteps away – markets popping up with seasonal pumpkins and tatties, live music spilling from pubs – it was a gentle nudge to slow down, savour the harvest vibes. No regrets about that sheep delay; it was the perfect start to a holiday that felt tailor-made for autumn’s embrace. If you’re chasing that same magic, time your trip for when the leaves are falling – pure gold. |
