About Loch Ness
I’ll never forget the drive up to Inverness – we’d piled the kids, the dog, and half the contents of our kitchen into the car, dreaming of misty Loch Ness adventures. About an hour north of the central belt, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our windscreen was its personal scratching post. No harm done, just a bit of woolly fluff and a lot of laughter as we pulled over for a cuppa and a photo op. By the time we trundled into town, the anticipation was buzzing – would the monster make an appearance, or would we settle for fish and chips?

Pulling up to our stylish second-floor apartment overlooking the River Ness felt like striking gold. Tucked right in the heart of Inverness, it’s the perfect spot: close enough to the action but with those idyllic views to make you forget the world. We huffed up the communal staircase with our bags – a proper workout after the drive – and stepped into this quirky little haven. The open-plan living space hit us first: those comfy leather sofas begging for a collapse, and a dining table screaming for board games and home-cooked stews. It was spot on for us – me, my other half, the two lads, and even the dog who claimed a corner as his throne.

First impressions? Magic. We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a stroll along the riverbank, the water sparkling under the Highland sun. Inverness has this effortless charm – you’re minutes from cosy cafes and the odd street performer, but it’s all so relaxed. That evening, we simmered up a massive pot of stew while the kids battled it out over Monopoly, spilling crisps everywhere. Cottage life chaos at its finest, but the kind that warms your soul.

The next day, we wandered down to the Ness Islands, just a short hop away – proper family territory with tree-lined paths, picnic spots, and the river rushing by. The boys went wild chucking sticks for the dog, while we pretended to be nature experts spotting otters (or was that just a log?). Lunch was simple: sandwiches from a nearby deli, scoffed on a bench with views that made you pinch yourself. No grand plans, just those little moments that stick.

We couldn’t skip the Loch itself, so a gentle drive out to Drumnadrochit – about 15 miles but felt like stepping into legend. Urquhart Castle ruins loomed dramatically over the water, and we spent hours clambering about, half-expecting Nessie to pop up for a wave. Back at the flat, film night on the sofas with popcorn fights sealed the deal. Amid the giggles, I had a quiet moment of reflection: holidays like this remind you life’s not about ticking boxes, but these messy, joyful bits with the people who matter.

It was pure relaxed bliss – no frills, just us, the river views, and enough Highland air to recharge the batteries. If you’re after a family break with heart, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
