About Loch Ness
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot near Loch Ness last December – the sat-nav decided to throw a proper wobbly just as we hit the winding roads from Inverness, sending us on a daft detour through some sheep-dotted fields. We ended up laughing our heads off, windows down despite the chill, with Highland cows staring at us like we were the intruders. But honestly, that little mishap only ramped up the anticipation; by the time we crested the hill towards Munlochy, about 1.3 miles away, the property came into view like a festive beacon, all lit up against the frosty twilight. First impressions? Blimey, it was even better than the photos – this grand holiday home rising from the countryside felt like stepping into a cosy Christmas card.

We arrived buzzing with that pre-holiday glow, bags stuffed with mince pies and mulled wine ingredients, and the winter season was already weaving its magic. Snow dusted the long drive and the backdrop of trees, turning everything into a proper winter wonderland. Pushing through the glass doors into the conservatory, we were hit with that airy spaciousness, sunlight (well, the weak December kind) streaming in and making the whole place feel alive despite the short days. Straight into the games room we went – pool cues out before coats were off, the L-shaped sofa perfect for sprawling with hot chocolates while the kids challenged us to Mario Kart on the telly.

The sitting room welcomed us next, tartan throws everywhere embracing that full-on Scottish Highland vibe, ample seating for our big family group to huddle round the fireplace as dusk fell early. Windows galore meant we could watch the rolling hills fade into misty blues, the winter light painting everything in soft silvers. Then the kitchen – a chef’s dream, massive and kitted out with every gadget for whipping up breakfasts of porridge and black pudding. We hired the cook one evening (genius move for lazy festive feasting), and the dining area with its big central table groaned under turkey and all the trimmings. A massive Christmas tree twinkled there too, decorations sparkling like they’d been pinched from Santa’s workshop – the season made it all feel extra special, you know?

Nine king-size bedrooms sorted us lot out perfectly, each with zip-links if needed, en-suites or private baths so no one was queuing in the cold mornings, and views over the countryside that looked straight out of a snow globe. Downstairs WC came in handy with everyone traipsing in from the chill. Outside, the large garden was a winter playground: vast parking for our cars, the hot tub steaming invitingly under a light frost (pure bliss after chilly walks), a half-moon patio where we braved mulled wine al fresco one crisp afternoon, and a climbing frame the little ones adored even in their bobble hats. The tennis court stayed quiet under the dew, but the lawn was prime for picnics wrapped in blankets, gazing at the hills.

Staying here in December shaped everything – those early nights drew us indoors for board games and stories, the cold air making the hot tub and fireside chats irresistible, and the festive decorations amplified the joy. Made me reflect a bit, actually; in the rush of life back home, I forget how a seasonal escape like this recharges the batteries, reminding you what family’s all about. If you’re chasing a Loch Ness holiday laced with winter magic, this spot near Munlochy delivers in spades. We’re already plotting a return.
