About Oban
I’ll never forget the drive up to Oban – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just as we hit that twisty bit of the A85, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a wild goose chase down a single-track lane. Hearts in mouths, we squeezed past a farmer’s tractor with inches to spare, laughing nervously as mud splattered the car. But oh, what a relief when we finally pulled up – the anticipation had been building all week, and those first glimpses of the bay twinkling in a sudden break of clouds? Magic. Straight away, it felt like we’d stumbled into a hug from Scotland itself.

The place was a modern, spacious yet cosy haven, tucked away in a peaceful spot just a five-minute drive from Oban town centre. No grand entrance or fuss – just a welcoming vibe that whispered, “Kick off your shoes and stay a while.” After that mad dash, we dumped the bags and flopped onto the huge corner sofa, staring out at the garden rolling down towards the water. That first evening, we cracked open a bottle of local whisky (picked up from the Co-op on the way), and that was it – holiday mode activated.

The joy of the next few days was doing precisely nothing, and loving every lazy second. Mornings started slow: I’d brew a pot of tea, grab a book from the shelf – some dog-eared thriller I’d been meaning to read for months – and head out to the garden. It’s a proper suntrap when the weather plays ball, with comfy loungers begging you to stretch out and watch the ferries chug across to Mull. No itinerary, no alarms. Just the rustle of pages, the distant call of gulls, and the odd curious sheep peering over the fence like it was judging my lack of ambition. Lunch? A simple picnic of cheese from Oban’s wee deli and crusty bread, eaten right there under the sky. Pure bliss.

Afternoons melted into dozing or wandering the garden paths, picking up shells or just breathing in that salty air. One day, I caught myself staring at a patch of wildflowers for a good half-hour, mesmerised by a bee doing its thing. Who knew slowing down could feel this revolutionary? We did pop into town once or twice – a gentle stroll along the harbour to grab fish and chips from the van, wrapped in paper and eaten on a bench watching the world go by. But mostly, it was us, the garden, and that glorious inertia. No hikes up Ben Nevis or boat trips; just the simple rhythm of tides and tea refills.

Looking back, I realise how knackered I’d been before – always rushing, always onto the next thing. This break was my gentle nudge to pause, to let the world spin without me for a bit. If you’re craving that rare gift of proper downtime, find yourself a spot like this near Oban. It’ll recharge your soul faster than you can say “another cuppa?”
